If Obama Picks Biden, Does It Force McCain to Roll the Dice?
McCain already knows there will be revolt by several leaders of the Christian winger nutso crowd if he picks Ridge because of the pro-life stance. That's been said by every talking head in the business. And, as seen in the primaries, Romney is not considered a "true" Christian (as if all these sanctimonious assholes are). Lieberman has already been deemed a total non-starter. But, if Obama selects Biden, McCain cannot put up this putz, Pawlenty who Biden will eat for breakfast (as the country asks: Who the hell is Paul Lenty??). Doesn't it mean he is going to have to roll out Ridge or Romney and hope to God he sufficiently bullshitted the crowd last night to keep the sheep in the pen??? It's not going to go over good if he has to take one of these guys.

11. i know. i have a strange feeling that it might
be bayh.

the reason i think it will be this week is because of the e-mail that got sent out. remember "be the first to know". we had to give our e-mail and cell phone #. of course, they already had my e-mail.

3. If McCain views Obama's VP pick as a threat
(which is how I do think they would view Biden), they just may have to roll the dice, as you put it. Good.

5. If McCain tries to upset the GOP power brokers' apple cart, he
pays.

We've had some juicy and provocative threads here about the corner McCain's painted himself into.

If he chooses "boldly," to emphacize his "maverick" identify (yes, it's a joke to us but the media are still pimping it), he might likely go with Ridge or Lieberman, both of whom are pro-Choice. So he either is of the impression that he's likely to win the presidency without the fundie base because he's such a "maverick," or he knows he can't win and wants to marginalize the fundies in the party.

The fundies never liked him to start with. They'll like him a whole lot less if he picks Ridge or Lieberman.

The other problem is I can't think of one state Lieberman helps him with at all. Possibly Florida, but he already is polling fairly well there already.

Ridge might narrow the percentage in Pennsylvania but he would repel fundie nutbags across a lot of other districts in the country, and they'd likely stay home or vote every line except the presidential race, sinking McCain.

If McCain goes with Romney, he runs a similar risk. Fundies are overwhelmingly hyper-Protestants and they are not of a mind to accept a Mormon. Some will. Some will just bite down hard on the bullet and go vote, but quite a few, IMO, will say, 'No way. He can whistle for my vote," and just stay home.

I agree with you on Pawlenty. He is marginally capable and relatively inoffensive but McCain needs a Hail Mary, I think. he needs a big-time general or Reagan-raised-from-the-dead, or something. He needs someone who likely isn't on his list. Portman might help in Ohio but why would someone with a bright political future take a job running with crabby old John McCain, whose shp is gurgling down, down, down by the hour?

Ditto Thune.

Romney wants it. Fiorina wants it. And Huckabee wants it.

If Obama chooses Biden, Biden would definitely eat Pawlenty for lunch, if Pawlenty is McCain's choice. After the veep debate, an EMS crew will have to carry Pawlenty off in a stretcher.

9. he won't choose lieberman.
lieberman is a jew which could hurt the ticket and aside from being pro-iraq war, lieberman's voting record tends to be liberal.

12. Congressman Cantor, who is also Jewish, would help McCain. I don't
care for Cantor's politics, but he might make a strong stand in Virginia, which is under siege from the blue team.

Cantor is said to be popular among conservatives. I'm a bit behind the pace on him, so I'm going to be doing some googling here between now and the Pukes' convention.

16. No way can McCain pick Pawlenty if Obama picks Biden.
Pawlenty would look like such an amateur next to Biden.
