Latest smear against Obama an abomination

Book exploits racial fears, hate in effort to scare white America

Jerome R. Corsi's book about Barack Obama is a good example of the right wing's racial fear-mongering.

In reducing Obama's race for the presidency to an "abomination," Corsi is using the same tired tactics that were used when it became clear that the late Harold Washington would likely become the first black mayor of Chicago.

Corsi's words are meant to warn skittish white folks that an Obama in the White House would be the beginning of the end.

And the racial cues are obvious.

Instead of a warm and smiling Obama peering from the cover, Simon & Schuster and its editor, Mary Matalin, a former Republican operative, chose a menacing and noticeably darker photograph of Obama.

Origin of black churches ignored
Corsi's book made the front page of Wednesday's New York Times even though the reporters acknowledged that several of the book's charges are "unsubstantiated, misleading or inaccurate."

After the November 2004 Presidential election, Corsi emerged as one of the leading advocates for the U.S. government to take a hard line with the Iranian government. A January 2005 article in the Financial Times (UK) described Corsi as a "prominent backer" of the Alliance for Democracy in Iran: "He believes the freeze on nuclear development agreed between Iran and the European Union will collapse by March and that Israel, supported by the US, will then launch military strikes," it stated.

In February 2005, Corsi appeared as "spokesman" for the Iran Freedom Foundation (IFF), a newly established 501(c)(3) non-profit group.

During the 2006 election season, Corsi co-wrote a book with J. Kenneth Blackwell, who was running for Ohio governor.

In the fall of 2006, Corsi wrote numerous columns for WorldNetDaily attacking Blackwell's opponent, Ted Strickland. Corsi denied coordination with or compensation from Blackwell's campaign for writing the articles.<3>

Corsi has been a booster of the Minuteman Project, even co-authoring a book with founder Jim Gilchrist, but Corsi has had an apparent falling out with Gilchrist after Gilchrist endorsed Mike Huckabee for president. Corsi used articles he wrote for WorldNetDaily to prod Gilchrist into retracting his endorsement.<4>

Corsi has also been an activist against the North American Union, joining a coalition of fellow conservatives to fight against it.
