Why Can't McSame Get Above 40%?
I don't really care why, or want to know, in fact I hope he goes even further down. I bring this up because it is a myth that the race is close. It's not but the media keeps putting out that it is, that Obama can't close the deal, break 50%.

Well the truth is, if he wins by 6 points that would equal 50 electoral votes and a landslide. So what I would like to see is every time a Buchanan or a Con of the same ilk asks why Obama can't close the deal, I'd like to see them asked why can't McSame break 40. My suspicion is that, that's his celling and he will never do better while Obama's current numbers represent his floor and will go shooting up in Sept.

4. I think McCain's cealing is 43%. He has never gone above 43 in the RCP average.
Obama hovers just under 50% in the RCP average.

6. It is a combination
of reasons. Think in terms of the "three groups" we discuss that are part of every election. McCain's group of solid supporters is supposed to be, of course, the republican party. And, in his imagination, he has the ability to draw from the opposition/democrats, and capture a big number of the undecided voters.

In fact, his base is crumbling -- not so much just because he is the republican nominee, as much as he is the nominee due to its crumbling. McCain cannot unite the republican party now, and probably will not be able to do so, no matter who he picks for VP.

His hopes on exploiting a divide in the democratic party, based on the Obama-Clinton/man-female tensions from the spring, are proving to be illusionary. And he is going to be as popular with independents as high gas prices are in the fall.
