MY DAD BLOWS ANOTHER GASKET- another great response to a neocon
Edited on Sat Aug-02-08 08:22 PM by powergirl
You may remember about a month ago, my dad blew a major one - after some morans (sic) send him a ridiculous neocon email. Well, they haven't learned their lesson. To recap, my dad, Phillip, a white guy, about 72 years old, native Texan, went to segregated schools in the south, former army, and a Republican not too long ago is voting for OBAMA. He wants to make things right in this country and hopefully help remove the stain of racism on our country. This, of course, has his neocon colleagues all in a dither. He received, in his words, a "smart ass" email from one of them. It is below. My Dad's responses are in ALL CAPS. Enjoy

I'm voting Democrat because:
I believe the government will do a better job of spending the money I earned and saved than I would.

NOT REALLY. I WILL VOTE REPUBLICAN SO THEY CAN CONTINUE TO SPEND $150,000,000,000 A YEAR ON A WAR THAT AT LEAST 60% OF AMERICANS WANT TO STOP. NO WORRIES, MY GRANDCHILDREN WILL PAY THE BILL -- TO THE CHINESE.

I'm voting Democrat because:
Freedom of speech is fine as long as nobody is offended by it.

NOT REALLY. I'LL VOTE REPUBLICAN SO THEY CAN CONTINUE TO AUTHORIZE THE NSA AND THE PHONE COMPANIES TO LISTEN TO MY PHONE CONVERSATIONS WITHOUT A WARRANT. WHO COULD BE OFFENDED?

I'm voting Democrat because:
When we pull out of Iraq I trust that the bad guys will stop what they're doing because they suddenly think we're good people.

NOT REALLY. I'LL VOTE REPUBLICAN BECAUSE SENATOR MCCAIN NEVER WANTS TO LEAVE IRAQ. MAYBE MY GRANDCHILDREN WILL GET THE CHANCE TO SEE BAGHDAD -- IN UNIFORM.

I'm voting Democrat because:
I believe that people who CAN'T tell us if it will rain on Friday CAN tell us that the polar ice caps will melt away in ten years if I don't start driving a Prius.

NOT REALLY. I'LL VOTE REPUBLICAN SO WE CAN WAIT TO SEE IF IT WILL REALLY HAPPENS. MAYBE THEN IT WILL BE TOO LATE, BUT WHAT THE HELL? WHAT'S GOOD FOR GM IS GOOD FOR AMERICA, RIGHT?

I'm voting Democrat because:
I'm not concerned about the slaughter of millions of babies so long as we keep all death row inmates alive.

NOT REALLY. I'LL VOTE REPUBLICAN SO WE CAN GET MORE JUSTICES ON THE SUPREME COURT THAT WILL STEER US BACK INTO THE PATH OF RIGHTEOUSNESS. WHO NEEDS THE CONSTITUTION WHEN WE HAVE A BIBLE?

I'm voting Democrat because:
I believe that business should not be allowed to make profits for themselves. They need to break even and give the rest away to the government for redistribution as IT sees fit.

NOT REALLY. I'LL VOTE REPUBLICAN SO GOOD REPUBLICAN CEO'S CAN CONTINUE TO RAPE AND PILLAGE THE CORPORATIONS THAT MAKE UP OUR RETIREMENT PORTFOLIOS.

I'm voting Democrat because:
I believe three or four pointy headed elitist liberal judges need to rewrite the Constitution every few days to suit some fringe organization kooks who could NEVER get their agendas past the voters.

NOT REALLY. I'LL VOTE REPUBLICAN SO WE CAN GET MORE JUDGES THAT WILL PUT THE FRINGE GROUPS IN THEIR PLACES -- ON THE FRINGE. AFTER ALL, I AM NOT A MEMBER OF A FRINGE GROUP -- AM I?

I'm voting Democrat because:
I believe that when the terrorists don't have to hide from us over there, and when they come over here I don't want to have any guns in the house to fight them off.

NOT REALLY. I'LL VOTE REPUBLICAN BECAUSE THEY WILL ROOT OUT THE TERRORISTS OVER HERE, EVEN IF THEY MAKE A MISTAKE NOW AND THEN. WHAT THE HELL DOES /HABEAS CORPUS/ MEAN ANYWAY? SOUNDS LIKE SOMETHING A POINTY-HEADED ELITIST LIBERAL JUDGE WOULD SAY. HERE'S ANOTHER GOOD LATIN WEIRD SAYING: NON SEQUITUR.

37. Dad sounds like many Republicans round these parts-good but ashamed
There are a few good Republicans still left. I know several. I've even helped them get elected to local office. But they would have no chance of partisan office. They are just too decent.

I even talked to the local Repug rep about one and he said "He's not our type." Let's see he's rich, successful, visionary, respected, honest, and truthful. What do you mean he's not your type??

39. Rare and valuable in our society.
"If you're not a liberal at 20, you have no heart, and if you're not a conservative at 40, you have no head."
-- Winston Churchill

I had a history teacher who was fond of that quote. I never agreed with it. Heart and head are not mutually exclusive. Just try living without either. Renouncing your ideals is not a prerequisite of aging. I always considered the person who can continue to hold on to their heart without losing their head as a rare human being.

I don't know him but I know you said your dad was a Republican so it's likely he did (and may very well still) consider himself a conservative but your dad is a liberal -- AT 72.

And please tell him that that is meant, of course, as the highest compliment.

56. Gloria Steinem pointed out in 1979...
...that the conventional wisdom that young adults tend to be liberal and their elders conservative doesn't necessarily play out that way ("Why Young Women Are More Conservative," reprinted in Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions). In fact I was more conservative in my teens and early 20s. With exposure to different cultures and ideas, my perspective changed.

One thing that does bother me is that it's still culturally acceptable, at least in the media, to marginalize and denigrate older adults. I've even seen it done by older adults themselves (David Broder, call your damn office). If anything, we all need to explore different perspectives, especially those produced by decades of experience.

I had my own early flirtation with Goldwater conservatism and libertarianism. I started morphing into a liberal in my 40's. Actually, most of my belief system was really liberal all along. Cognitive dissonance began setting in when I really considered the consequences of libertarianism.

You should say to a Republican, "man, the landlord/mortgage company is arrogant, they think they can spend my hard earned money better than me. Rent/mortgage payments are legalized theft, *I* earned my money, not THEM."

Then when they correct point out that the landlord/mortgage company provides something of value to you that you have to pay for, then say "oh you mean like roads, schools, national defense, currency, law and order, police, fire, court systems, air traffic control, intelligence services, social security, medicare, border security..."

unfortunately, I don't think the morans (sic) to whom this was addressed will understand the irony.

I have a terrible feeling they'll think he's serious and applaud him for speaking the "TRUTH".

That's the trouble with most of 'em. They don't understand stuff like subtlety, nuance, irony, sarcasm, etc.

That's what makes 'em so scary....

Absolutely refreshing to read that someone actually votes for a candidate because he beieves they are best for his country. Not the run of the mill Grand Old Party type that vote strictly for Party election, after election, after election because their Dad did, their Grandpa did, because their Great Grandpa did . . . you get the picture!

my dad grew up in texas too. he joined the army and fought in korea, when he got out, he joined the marines. my dad detested segregation, so when he and mom got married, they moved to los angeles, where i was born. when we'd drive to texas every summer to visit family, my mom would fry chicken because my dad refused to go to any back door to buy food, and we'd pee on the side of the road.
:patriot: from my dad to your dad.

70. Give your dad a big fat kiss on the forehead!
Tell him to keep fighting the fight! This is what it will take, your father like many others know the truth and aren't afraid to say it outloud..!!:toast:
