Keyes: Obama's Not Black Enough
Snuffleupagus makes you pay for transcripts, but Keyes himself has courteously posted Sunday's lunacy on his own site:

http://www.renewamerica.us/archives/media/interviews/04_08_15thisweek.htm

STEPHANOPOULOS: You've accused the Republican Party of acting in a racial manner in the past. You don't think you're being used here because of your race?

KEYES: Well, frankly, I think that because of my race, race is no longer on the table.

A matter of fact, I think it's kind of strange--it's one of those things that shows that sometimes people don't think things through. Barack Obama and I have the same race--that is, physical characteristics. We are not from the same heritage. And it's about time people started to realize that there's something racist about not looking at the specific heritage of individuals, but only looking at their skin color.

My ancestors toiled in slavery in this country. They were people who were directly a part of the oppression of slavery in this country. My consciousness, who I am as a person, has been deeply shaped by my struggle--deeply emotional and deeply painful--with the reality of that heritage and what it says about humanity, what it says about conscience, what it says about the terrible possibilities of human wickedness and injustice....

Just when you thought it couldn't get any weirder, the Master himself plays the race card against an opponent who is himself black. Oh, man, could Spike Lee ever have some fun with this!

4. IRP... more like urrp!
The IL GOP will have to swallow that little bit of bile that has crept up in their throats if they honestly want to follow through on this charade.

The only Party I've ever seen die was Perot's Reform Party when he let it get hijacked by Buchanon. It wasn't as much fun as watching the Republican party die in Illinois.

19. plus he says
his situation is different from hers and that he's not a hypocrit because the Illinois GOP asked him to run. What BS. Seems I recall some NY heavyweights like Pat Moynihan (who was seeking a replacement for his seat), Charlie Rangel and Chuck Schumer asking Hillary to run. And
NY Congresswoman, Nita Lowey, who was considered the likely candidate to step up to the race for Moynihan's seat, GLADLY stepped aside for Hilary too. So Keye's argument or his version of "it depends on what the meaning of 'is' is" is shot to hell.

Repukes are so full of shit.

This is too good. I swear with the flirtation with Da Coach, the Nuge, then relying on this dimwit combined with that freak running down in Florida…the Republican Party sure looks to be in good hands. :kick: :dunce: :wow:

15. So the good voters of IL
should vote for Keyes because his ancestors suffered more than Obama's.

Guess Keyes want's a bit of payback for the suffering of his ancestors.

Keyes is the gift that keeps on giving.

17. It's foolish to casually dismiss this line of reasoning.
Edited on Tue Aug-17-04 03:14 PM by BillyBunter
It's partially an offshoot of one of the arguments made against affirmative action, that programs should be designed for circumstances, not skin color. So a poor white kid from, say, Appalachia, could easily be considered as disadvantaged as a poor black kid from the inner city. That argument has a lot of sway these days. Keyes is a religious extremist, but he isn't stupid.

And by the way, I'm the black product of an inner city upbringing, the descendant of slaves, and I can tell you I look at racial issues differently, and have a different world view, than friends of mine who grew up in Africa. Obama grew up here, so I think Keyes is off base from a strictly factual standpoint, but the argument itself makes a certain amount of sense, and you have to remember he is running a campaign. He doesn't really care about truth, he wants to throw stuff against the wall and hope that it sticks.

some of Alan's ancestors toiled in the fields during American slavery ...

some of Barack's ancestors toiled in servitude during British colonization of Kenya ...

Which was worse and who the fuck cares? Is this the kind of bullshit this fool is going to run on?

Hmmm. Chicago DUers, do the Blackstone Rangers still exist?

24. He's insane but also kind of CORRECT
It's not right for the media to keep up this "OMG two black men are running against each other!"

You wouldn't hear that kind of crap for two white men. Just because you share color doesn't mean you share heritage or interests. Thank God for that because Keyes is a wreck of a man and Obama is going to be a great senator.
