I have one thing to say to those who are purge happy...
Edited on Sun Jun-01-08 07:08 PM by Zynx
Stop being such an asshole for once in your miserable lives. Seriously, you guys are intractable morons.

We won't accomplish anything here at DU or across this country in this pivotal election year if we are busy purging to party trying to create some kind of ideological purity. Anytime these sorts of rectification efforts have been tried in any historical context the result has been disaster. Now is the time for a united front against the Republicans and not for trying to administer loyalty tests and ideological purity exercises.

Some people are naturally far too competitive and can't drop their blinders when a contest is on, but they'll come around.

27. It's not appeasement. Spinning it as appeasement is part of the problem.
Appeasement is when you give in to an unreasonable demand in order to maintain the peace. But it's not unreasonable for almost half of the party to expect their concerns and opinions to be addressed. This isn't like a general election, where the "winning party" gets to completely ignore the needs and wants of the "losing party"; if all Democrats (including the millions who support Clinton) don't feel welcomed and *wanted* by the larger party, then the party suffers.

Nobody owes the Democrats their vote; it must be earned. If Obama takes control of the party, it becomes his responsibility to earn the votes of the people who didn't trust him in the first place. That's not "appeasement"; that's fairness and smart politics, and it's also democracy.

All voices matter. Not just those who've backed the winning horse all along.

31. There's really nothing to be done about people who are determined
that they won't vote for Candidate X under any circumstances. There are Clinton supporters who swear they won't vote for Obama *ever*, and Obama supporters who swear that they'll drop him like a hot potato if he chooses Clinton as his VP. They're both of the same ilk, and should rightly be ignored.

I agree that we all need to get behind the nominee, but I also recognize that the people who've supported Clinton all this time deserve to be assured that their concerns and thoughts aren't going to be ignored just because they "lost". That's the kind of attitude that tears the party apart more savagely than either candidate's actions alone ever could.

Democrats don't treat each other like we treat Repukes, and yet...that's exactly what's been happening. Until that stops, healing will come slowly and incompletely, if at all.

The Obama camp openly welcomes anyone, including any moderate Republicans who desire change, but the Clinton supporters who are openly declaring war on our party arent even acting like moderate Republicans, they are acting no better than the diehard neocon side of the GOP, and we shouldnt have to endure that kind of person regardless of party affiliation.

are you speaking of those who have vowed to vote McShame in November if their Democratic candidate doesn't win? Those people should be banned today, as far as I am concerned. They are no longer Democrats if they have ever stated or clicked on any poll that would vote for the Repug in November.

Why should we be tolerant of those who have denounced the Democratic Party through their words or actions?

There are those who just like to disrupt, but we have people here who want to impose a damn near totalitarian agenda. There is a thread in GDP about banning the word "Hillary" and it got three recs. That means that at least 4 people here feel that way since the author cannot recommend their own post. I find that disturbing.

The limits within the rules should be reasonable enough for reasonable people, but some REALLY brook no dissent.

Not only is this tiresome, it doesn't promote the kind of awareness of one's surroundings that is neccessary to win an ELECTION.

24. That word again.
So many seem to think it's a virtue. So many seem to think it's a sensible thing to regularly employ in a constituent republic.

The threads that extol the virtues of "ignore" are just plain disturbing. The crushing need to tombstone anyone who points out the Emperor's underwear is not a virtue.

I'm sick of that word. Maybe I just don't want bliss.

28. It's really weird. I have never in my life seen self-styled progressives with such an intense
desire to silence those who disagree with them.

Not only do we have purge threads every day, but there was even a thread not long ago, by a longtime DUer (not a troll), calling for talk radio "personalities" to be prosecuted on some sort of unspecified charges. So much for that pesky First Amendment, I guess.

We even have yet another thread today by someone who was not around for the last election and so really does believe that everyone who will not take a loyalty oath to her candidate will get bounced. She and her fellow hope 'n unity junkies are reveling in the thought of their opponents being silenced forever.

It's amazing how much this place has changed in six months.

32. the religious element is no coincidence
There's a reason why the word "cult" has been used so much. The repetitive threes in speeches are lunkheaded echoing of demagoguery. So many are aching for a fulfillment that they're literally throwing themselves at the movement with a glee that feels like frenzy.

Perhaps the sheer number of imperfections that are coming to light about this man compel them to shout ever louder to drown out their own creeping doubts, or perhaps the flavour-aid is so tasty that no hint of sourness can be discerned. Whatever the reason, opposition must be CRUSHED.

Reading Skinner's sensible bit of perspective about Clinton's RFK reference was doubly alarming for the sheer number of people who would have none of it. It was a gangster's threat of assassination, and PROOF was in the very air we breathe. What scary delusion. What anti-social, selfish putting of oneself above all others. What complete nincompoopery. (Damn...it's contagious...)

Much of their campaign has been a mixture of ecstatic glee and blistering damnation, and much as thrill-junkies may love being fulfilled for once in their drab and feckless lives, the rest of us are disgusted by the display, and those on the other side will be nauseated by the spectacle. Ignoring pitfalls is not a virtue.

This is everybody's future, and the recklessness of joyriding avengers isn't going to keep the Supreme Court populated by the sane. There's no virtue in losing in this situation.

Egad.

59. That's funny - I've never seen so many so-called progressives support a proven liar like clinton.
Well, not funny exactly. Disturbing is more accurate.

And then they are gone if they continue. I cannot wait to hit refresh and see GD: P become GD:GE.

40. Here at DU, I am seriously looking forward to seeing the purge of rightwing posers.
During normal times, they have to be very, very careful to avoid attracting attention. These days, it's impossible to tell wingnuts from fire-breathing Dem partisans.

99. I welcome the day we come together
When Clinton supporters stop calling Obama's supporters cultist, women haters, etc.

I'm not sure if you are referring to the fact that people have said that they want to see people banned who don't support the nominee or not, but that's what your post infers. The fact is once the nominee is decided, people will have a week to get it out of their system. My guess is 95% will come together and fight on to the primary unified. There are going to be the few who decided they will continue to attack our nominee. Those people should be TS'd if they can't pull their heads out of their ass. Only time will tell how many choose that road.
