On the ground insight: On WJ this morning they were discussing past close
races and who won them. The wonderful media guy (forgot name) said Humphrey almost beat Nixon, but the disturbance at the convention worked against Humphrey. I was on an archaeological dig in Northern Louisiana. Had just turned 21, going to school in New Orleans, born in Florida. Did not know how to register in FL or LA, especially Northern Louisiana. Being a student with no permanent residence yet, did not think it was an issue, besides, who in their right mind would vote for Nixon?!!1!! No way could he win! Well I learned my lesson and the next election I was a delegate for McGovern. This election, Obama is seeing to it that the young people are getting registered and are aware of the dangers of a McCain presidency. I think there will be a huge tidal wave of Dem voters out there. On the ground, reporting 40 years late.

1. You are correct that the disturbance at the convention hurt our side, but also the war protests
leading up to the election turned many middle aged Americans against the Democrats, as Nixon used the code words Moral Majority to paint student protesters as immoral dirty Pinko hippies, a meme that exists on the right to this day
