31. If blacks vote for Obama, it's identity politics; if whites vote for Hillary it's racism?
There's a double standard going on. Of course some of it is racist, but a lot of is simply identity politics. There are whites who will vote for any white against a black, and there are blacks who will vote for any black against a white. There are men who will never vote for a woman if a man is running, and there are women who will never vote for a man if a woman is running.

Ain't America grand. :eyes:

38. Well, I wish they had asked those same voters if they would vote for Colin Powell.
Remember years ago, when it seemed he would run? Gosh, people were excited about voting for him. I really wanted to vote for him, because back then I didn't have the keen disdain for Repub politicians that I do now. I just liked him, a lot.

So maybe that's the way to narrow it down; if they wouldn't vote for Obama because of race, maybe it's because they're identifying with Hillary being white, those being the only two factors from which to choose. But maybe, just maybe they would set Hillary aside and vote for Colin Powell because they would identify with him being a military leader, or his gravitas, his demeanor.

I worry very much about Colin Powell being on McCain's ticket, although so far I see no indication of that happening.

80. I can't speak for all 18 million of us, but the problem with Colin
Edited on Wed May-21-08 07:22 AM by Liberal_Stalwart71
is his policies, just like the problem with Condi and Clarence 'Uncle Tom' Thomas. It is their policies, not their race. So while blacks may respect Powell for his service to this country and for who he is, many won't vote for him because of what he stands for and that he supports Bush's politics. I know a lot of blacks who would vote for him, though.

It's not just about race because blacks have voted for white over black candidates for most of our lives. If we didn't, say hello to President Al Sharpton or President Jesse Jackson...or even President (or Senator) Alan Keyes. And what about Governor Lynn Swann or Senator Michael Steele? All black; all lost to white candidates. Why? Because black people voted for the white candidate. Don't know how clearer I can make this point.

94. The problem with Colin Powell, I believe, can be overcome
I think a lot about this, because it worries me. If he can be painted as a "good soldier," but someone who only has the interests of this country in mind and would exercise his personal good judgment as a leader without the strings being pulled, he could overcome the antagonism of his role in the invasion. One thing in his favor is that Repubs are not so violently opposed to the war/invasion and would not hold that against him. Also, the man has incredible gravitas. It saddens me what he did, considering how much I have respected him in the past.

Al Sharpton, I think he has a remarkably sharp wit, but I can't take him seriously as a candidate because he makes me laugh too much and I prefer someone who doesn't make so many jokes. As for Jesse Jackson, I'd be glad to vote for him, he's one of my favorite people of all time, but first he'll have to come clean about some of his anti-gay people who are involved with his Rainbow coalition. Maybe I'm out of the loop on some information or something, but I've never understood why he didn't become a much honored political figure.

Voting for someone who is the same race that you are is not racism. Voting AGAINST someone because they're not the same race that you are IS racism.

By the same token, voting for someone because they're a woman is not sexism. Voting AGAINST someone because they're a woman IS sexism.

We don't know how well he would have done in Kentucky or West Virginia. For all we know, he could have performed far worse than Obama. Yeah it looked like he was a popular pick, but back then polling wasn't nearly as deep as it is today and no election was held.

It's all speculation.

85. Do you mean "won't" vote or "don't" vote?
There is absolutely no evidence black voters won't vote for white candidates when black candidates are also running. In fact, just the opposite has been proven to be true time and again as blacks have consistently voted in overwhelming numbers in the past for white candidates even when black candidates were in the race. So the fact that in this race black voters are voting in large numbers for Barack Obama certainly doesn't mean that they "won't" vote for white candidates - it just means that in this instance black voters believe that Barack Obama is the better candidate.

To claim otherwise means that you believe, based on nothing more than the fact that the candidate they have chosen is black, that black voters suddenly turned racist in 2008 after decades of demonstrably non-racist voting behavior.

And if you believe that, you would also have to believe that white voters have been consistently racist in THEIR voting patterns in light of the fact that they have year after year after year voted in overwhelming numbers for white candidates - larger than the numbers of black voters voting for Obama - when black candidates were in the race

was determined by race..race is a factor. If people were asked if their vote was determined by gender, that would be a factor. Unfortunately black people have been voting for white people since they got the right to vote..without being killed in the process.

51. I understand what he is saying and its something I've noticed.
Edited on Tue May-20-08 09:47 PM by RL3AO
No matter how white the crowd is, there is normally always a few blacks strategically placed so they are clearly in the background. Just like when you look at a poster with four people on it, there will almost always be a white man, white woman, black man, and black woman. Sometimes one is substituted for another race.

Or, if you look at a poster or a commercial of a family. How often does this family have one boy and one girl with the mom and dad to make the perfect family of four? 75% of the time? 80? Its not an accident.

If you look back at past speeches you will notice it.

Sometimes its a young person in a crown of old people. Not always on racial lines.

72. Matthews gets his shorts in a twist over certain things and takes them out on people
in this case, it was the Clinton campaign's use of race in their talking points that got to him, but what got to him even more was when one of her operatives went on his show and accused him of doing the exact same thing, which he was offended by (1. he didn't do it and 2. he never ever wants to be seen as anything but the unique :eyes: person that he really is).

so they screwed up with him and when you screw up with Matthews, he starts looking at you crosseyed and suddenly sees all your faults magnified a 1000 times.

that's what happened and tonight he said, "they are all white".

she could probably get her money back by suing her campaign for malpractice.

65. A Whiter Shade of Pale
We skipped the light fandango
Turned cartwheels cross the floor
I was feeling kinda seasick
But the crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
As the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
The waiter brought a tray

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale
She said, there is no reason
And the truth is plain to see.
But I wandered through my playing cards
And would not let her be
One of sixteen vestal virgins
Who were leaving for the coast
And although my eyes were open
They might have just as wellve been closed
She said, Im home on shore leave,
Though in truth we were at sea
So I took her by the looking glass
And forced her to agree
Saying, you must be the mermaid
Who took neptune for a ride.
But she smiled at me so sadly
That my anger straightway died...

78. Race has nothing to do with it -- check history...Blacks vote White in past primaries/GEs....
Edited on Wed May-21-08 07:14 AM by quantass
White Bigots, who have shockingly openly admitted to never voting for Obama because he is black, are for Hillary...That to me is the embarassing factor how one can hate another human being solely by the skin color. Never forget that Hillary carried the majority of blacks early in the contests and it wasnt until she interjected Race and going evil when things changed (send me a PM and i can give you a list of links which have been posted many times here).

So the real question...are you one of her bigot supporters because statistically there is a good chance you are ... but if you're not then please learn to write more objective commentary and leave silly season to Hillary.

NON-WHITE person.

On Edit: Tweety was commenting on HRC's crowd in Louisville, Kentucky last night. Not a "person of color" in the whole room. :wow:

84. This from the man who said after her first debate performance:
(paraphrasing)

"Well, that was a pretty good speech, I'm surprised; she didn't sound that shrill at all."

I HATE him.

(I also despise Hillary, but sexist commentary about her is unnecessary.)

I tolerate him when he supports liberals... I think he's gearing up for a political run...

he's still a hack

I'm in the bag for Obama... so if I can get a little positive press for the candidate... in THIS environment... I'm happy about it

Remember... he's one of the assholes that did the Rah Rah, go Team pre-invasion...

never trust any of them

96. Chris Mathews hates Hillary....
he's written about his hatred for Hillary in his book(s). The whole MSNBC crew hate Hillary.
I really enjoy hearing them defend themselves when it comes to "pundit" comments. They'll even deny that they ever said Hillary should get out of the race. They are all a joke.
