Hillary Clinton Sending a Clear Message in West Virginia
Edited on Mon May-12-08 09:19 PM by bigtree

CLEAR FORK, W.Va. -- To those who suggest that she is simply biding her time until a graceful exit, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton had a message Monday: She is still running, and still arguing that she will be a stronger general election candidate than Sen. Barack Obama. (http://blog.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/05/12/clinton_running_hard_in_west_v.html?hpid=topnews)

"It's a fact that Democrats don't get elected unless West Virginia votes for you," Clinton said here, deep in a rural southern pocket of the state. "West Virginia has picked presidents pretty accurately. ... I am here today because I know what's really going to matter tomorrow: It's the votes of the people of West Virginia."

Clinton is expected to win West Virginia by a wide margin Tuesday, the sixth-to-last primary state. But she will still likely trail in pledged delegates and superdelegates, reducing her odds of winning the nomination, in the words of one of her own senior officials, to about 2 percent.

She made the electability argument, too, suggesting that she -- and thus, logically, not Obama -- would be able to win West Virginia in the general election. And as she traveled across the state, she found her message echoed by supporters who turned out to greet her. At Biscuit World, a diner in Charleston, one ardent 90-year-old Clinton supporter said she would not support Obama in the general election, and doubted he could beat McCain. "No, I won't, I'll just be honest about it," said Evelyn Keener, when asked if she would vote for the Democratic nominee if it is not Clinton. Keener's adult granddaughter, Cynthia Taylor, said the same. "It's Hillary all the way, or no way," Taylor said.

Hillary Clinton found dozens of supporters, and at least one of her rival's, as she started her Primary Eve Day with a stop at a local Biscuit World. (http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/05/12/1012021.aspx)

"We gotta get everybody out, gotta get everybody out," she said as she posed for a picture with a group of women.

One told her the weather forecast looked good. "Yup, let's make it happen, Clinton replied. "Get everybody out, it'll be a good day."

"I keep telling people, no Democrat has won the White House since 1916 without winning West Virginia."

As she sat in a booth signing a book, another woman said she hoped she woud "go all the way."

"We're gonna keep going as long as we have people like you helping us," Clinton said.

A gaggle of onlookers, photographers and reporters watched as Clinton made the rounds. “She’s so petite!” one woman exclaimed, as Clinton made her entrance. “No Democrat has won the White House since 1916 without winning West Virginia,” Clinton said as she shook hands and thanked some volunteers who had been tipped off to her visit. (http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2008/05/12/clinton-mixes-biscuits-with-politics-in-west-virginia/?mod=WSJBlog)

"Oh, I didn't want to do this," Smith said, embarrassed, wearing an Obama T-shirt as Clinton walked into the restaurant. "I didn't know she was going to be here." (http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5gyXVIfZ2F2CTuuxH3_93vuTP-ywwD90KBA000)

Smith, who lives in nearby Institute, said she liked Clinton but prefers Obama.

"We've got to get the Republicans out of there," she said.

As Clinton left the building, Smith stepped up to shake her hand. She told the candidate that getting a Democrat in office was her priority.

"It's been too long since we have," Clinton agreed, touching Smith's shoulder gently, and smiling.

Supporters of Sen. Hillary Clinton listen during a campaign rally in Logan, W.Va. Monday, May 12

Mort Victorson, 84, of Charleston has http://www.sundaygazettemail.com/News/ElectionCentral/200805120365">voted in every election since he started voting at age 21. Today, Victorson, along with his wife, Debbie donned Sen. Hillary Clinton stickers during her stop at Tudor's Biscuit World on Washington Street in Charleston.

It would be one three stops Clinton would make in the Mountain State today.

"I don't know her personally, but I like everything she stands for," Victorson said.

Debbie will also vote for Clinton on Tuesday. "I think she will live very large here," she said.

“It was West Virginia that made it possible for John Kennedy to become president,” Clinton said at Clear Fork. “Now, John Kennedy didn’t have the number of delegates he needed when he went to the convention in 1960. He had something equally as important — he had West Virginia behind him, because it’s a fact that Democrats don’t get elected president unless West Virginia votes for you…” (http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/05/12/clinton-draws-parallel-between-her-campaign-jfks-1960-run/)

Clinton added that West Virginia proportionately has more veterans, “more people who have served in the conflicts and in the armed forces of the United States….

“It is the hard-working, dedicated people of West Virginia who have really made America what it has been, and what it will be again.”

LOGAN, W.V. -- "Democrats don't get elected president unless West Virginia votes for you," said Clinton, 60, whose motorcade crept through fog-shrouded mountain switchbacks in a soaking rain to reach this mining town.

"It was West Virginia that made it possible for John Kennedy to become president," Clinton told 400 supporters at a local high school. "John Kennedy didn't have the number of delegates he needed when he went to the convention in 1960; he had something equally as important -- he had West Virginia behind him."

. . . like a football player seeking refuge between the white lines, Clinton seems to be having more fun these days than during more measured, sedate and pressure-packed appearances as the front runner. And the working-class crowds in the mill and mining towns were genuinely delighted by her decision to adopt them as her own -- and with her unrestrained attacks on oil companies, Chinese toy manufacturers and Wall Street money.

Stumping all day in the state, Clinton pressed her case on why she's best suited to be the party's nominee, despite trailing Obama in pledged delegates, states won, the popular vote and party superdelegate commitments, and while running a campaign that's millions of dollars in debt.

"The goal is to nominate someone who can beat John McCain in November," Clinton told a crowd in a packed middle-school gymnasium. "I wouldn't be in this race, I wouldn't be going up and down West Virginia ... I wouldn't be doing this if I didn't believe I could be the best president for West Virginia and America."

With the clock ticking, Hillary Clinton told an enthusiastic crowd here that tomorrow’s primary could be a “crucial turning point” in the presidential election, as she continued to play up the state’s significance for Democrats’ chances in the fall. (http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/05/12/1012909.aspx)

“West Virginia is a real indicator of which way the political winds are going to blow come the November election,” Clinton said. “This election we’ve had, this primary contest has been close and exciting -- the closest one anybody can remember. But the goal is to nominate someone who can beat John McCain in November. That’s what we’ve got to do.”

“I don’t need a guided tour of the White House,” she said. “I know my way around, and I know we gotta get to work immediately, because we’re not gonna have a lot of time.”

Clinton also emphasized the economy in an area “where people understand what hard work means,” she said. She claimed President Bush’s policy was simply “trickle-down economics,” and that most people “feel like they’ve been trickled on for seven years and didn’t get much of it.”

“As I was coming here … shaking hands, a man handed me a check and said. ‘You keep fighting, this will help,’” she said. “And I know that if I have your help tomorrow, we will send a very clear message.”

Hillary Clinton wrote in an op-ed for The Charleston Gazette, Sunday: http://www.wvgazette.com/Opinion/Op-EdCommentaries/200805100334

I was raised to believe in the promise of America. My grandfather was a factory worker, and my father served in the Navy and started a small business. My mother had a difficult childhood, but provided a loving home for our family and while she never got to attend college, she was determined that her children would. I have had every opportunity in life because of their hard work and sacrifice.

I carry with me not just their dreams, but the dreams of people like them all across our country: people who embrace hard work and opportunity, who never waver in the face of adversity, and who work day and night to make a better life for your children.

For the past seven years, I know so many of you have felt invisible to our president - holding your breath at the gas pump and the grocery checkout line; wondering what you'll do when health insurance disappears when a job does; seeing your loved ones who served our country in war ill-served when they return home.

I am running for president to stand for you and fight for your dreams and your future. I am running to give every child and every family the same opportunities and blessings that I had.

With two wars abroad and an economic crisis here at home, the stakes are higher than ever before. We need a president who knows how to make this economy work for middle-class families again and who is ready on day one to be commander in chief and keep our families safe. If you give me the chance, I will be that president.

Accomplishing all of this won't be easy. But if there is one thing you know about me, it's this: I don't back down from a challenge. I'll be there for you long after the speeches are over and the cameras are gone, and I will never stop listening to your voices and standing for your families.

We know the stakes in this election are high and the challenges great. But we also know the possibilities are endless with the right leadership. It is up to us to roll up our sleeves, start solving our toughest problems, and start delivering on the promise of this great nation that we love.

If she somehow steals this nomination from the rightful winner Barack Obama then we will all be crying later with the rest of the world.

It appalls me how Clinton and her supporters know the only way they can win is to have the super delegates over turn the will of the majority of voters....and they are ok with that.

Remember, he said he didn't hear it, couldn't disown him, then he did hear it and did disown him?

Disclosure is all well and good when it applies to anything Clinton but, disclosure is 'distracting from the issues' or 'racist' when it comes to anything Obama.

9. Nice pics . . . .
. . . . from an Obama supporter to a Clinton supporter. I especially like the one where she is greeting the young lady with the Obama shirt. I read the story on that photo and thought the cordial encounter reflected well on both sides. I also think the photo of the old guy with the sticker on his forehead is pretty neat.

The game's over, the crowd has left and people want to go home. You're still shooting foul shots that don't matter now. The security people are going to ask you to leave the gym now. Go home.

What you have just said defines Predjudice. You looked at a picture and defined them, simply because of skin color. You know nothing about them. You pre-judged them based on race.

It happens far to often in this country and it is very wrong. People here at DU should know better.

Especially when everyday Hillary supporters are being called racists here. Our nerves are a bit frayed.

55. Great post! You gotta love the way she fights!
That quality alone would make her a great President.

And this is worthy of repeating, to those (you know who you are, so I'll refrain from calling you any names) who want to just write off West Virginia:

“No Democrat has won the White House since 1916 without winning West Virginia,”

And since Obama doesn't have a fighting chance there, he too can kiss the presidency goodbye.

Which is why we must nominate Hillary.

118. I'm sorry, but the only "clear message" I've gotten from her in West Virginia is:
If you're white, vote for me, cause I'm white. White people are hard working. The others, not so much. You know what I'm talking about. (Nod, Wink)

It's the REPUBLICAN political strategy of the 60s/70s. It's not new or inventive. But still just as shameful - especially coming from a Democrat.

She's EXPLOITING a racial divide in this country.

Is it bad for Barack Obama come the general? Yeah. It is. You are confirming to racists that it's ok NOT to vote for a black guy just because he's black. Since when is that a Democratic principal?

Is it bad for Democrats? Yeah. It is. You don't think African Americans are paying attention to the shit that she says? You don't think they are upset that a Democratic candidate would say such things? You don't think this could effect their long term loyalty to the party? You don't think that even if somehow Hillary manages to do the impossible and get the nomination that this will SEAL THE DEAL on African Americans sitting this election out?

Is it bad for the Nation? Yeah. It is. It is systematically chipping away at all the progress we have made since the civil rights movement. It's telling RACIST IDIOTS that it's OK to think that way. It's NOT. PERIOD.

It makes me SO SO SO sad that she would employ this strategy. Especially NOW at such a crucial juncture in our history AND now that it is a near CERTAINTY that Obama's the nominee.

What really disturbs me more is that so many of her supporters still defend that kind of rhetoric. How can you do that? It honestly makes me feel BETRAYED. BETRAYED by my fellow democrats who, I THOUGHT I stood shoulder to shoulder with against intolerance - no matter which candidate we choose. How can you hear these things and not be outraged? Not ask them to change their message or tone?

Lastly, it's NOT good for Hillary either. Hillary and her supporters biggest problem all along is the ability to hear criticism, listen objectively and adjust. Instead they view any critics as enemies and automatically write off their opinion as invalid. They're not the enemy. They're just the messenger! And you've got a pile of dead ones at your door step.

You are getting a MAJOR backlash against this kind of talk. And not just from Obama supporters. Not just from the media. Not just from VOTERS. But now also from DELEGATES. Just today Jack Johnson of Maryland, a PLEDGED delegate to Hillary (NOT superdelegate - PLEDGED delegate), said he was switching sides. Jack Johnson is a black law-maker. You don't think her rhetoric had any effect on his decision? You don't think it cuts her black delegates and superdelegates to the core? The ones that have stayed loyal to her in the face of pressure from the black community and in many cases their own constituents who have by large majorities voted for Barack? If you were a black person in this country would YOU be able to stand up and continue fighting for her after she said such things? Why should they? Why should I? Why should you?

123. all that ignores what she actually said
Edited on Tue May-13-08 10:15 AM by bigtree
she claims to have a BROAD coalition of support and she says Obama lacks the same amount of support of the working-class whites. That means that she recognizes that support includes black voters and others. Big deal. Anyone can pull these statements on race out of context. I didn't hear a peep when the Obama camp and supporters talked about the wide margin of black voter support for Obama and pointed to the fact that she trails him with those voters.

But, I understand that exploiting the racial argument in favor of your candidate works for you. Good luck with that.

130. I am exploiting a racial argument? Seriously?! You exasperate me to the point of tears.
This honestly has nothing to do with me supporting "my candidate". Obama was never my first choice. After John Edwards left, I even supported Hillary. I'm not beholden to Barack or anyone.

I, as a human being and a progressive Democrat, have a problem with some of her statements. If I don't express my disappointment with the statements I feel I am not standing up for what's right. If I do express my disappointment with the statements, I get accused of exploiting race.

Even when I WAS a Clinton supporter, anytime I expressed disappointment with the nastiness and negativity, I've was essentially told to STFU. I'm accused of exploiting race if I say that I take offense at Hillary's racially charged comments. It's circular logic and the old neo-con tactic of blaming the enemy for your own sins. It's maddening and shows no respect for people who have differences of opinion. You are either beaten into submission or forced to leave. I WILL NEVER submit to the use of racial tactics. I WILL NEVER submit to damaging the party. I was FORCED to end my support of her.

I just don't understand why the Clinton campaign and their supporters have such a difficult time accepting criticism and adjusting. You guys assume that just because someone is being critical of a message or tactic that they are the ENEMY. Wrong. They are just letting you know that your message isn't coming off well to the public. You are at least being PERCEIVED as racist or ruthless or whatever. All it would take is a slight tweak in message or tone for her to come off much better and increase her appeal. But repeatedly you just shoot the messenger and turn up the volume.

I have repeatedly expressed my respect for you, bigtree. I've never spoken to you in a nasty way. I've commended you on good posts from both candidates' perspectives. But whatever. Accuse me of exploiting race because I express when I find a politician's statments racially inflammatory. Accuse me of being a sexist or a homophobe. Get mean when we have a difference of opinion. Shoot the messenger. Silence the opposition. Whatever you need to do. I give up.

145. yep, you're just politicking for Barack Obama, exploiting the issue of race to elevate him
. . . as far as I can see. That may be offensive to you, but it seems you want to drop your race bomb on the Clinton campaign, and by extension, her supporters as if there can't be a disagreement of interpretation of her statements. I'm not going to allow myself to be defined by what you believe, no matter how you may regard me personally.

I sincerely see the rhetoric over Clinton's statements as overblown and opportunistic to the Obama campaign.

Now I don't hate Robert Byrd, and I don't want to make this a thread about Robert Byrd. As a matter of fact, Robert Byrd has been far more of a Democrat than Hillary has been, where it really counts this decade.

But the fact is that he admitted to being a member of a hate group in the past, and was elected in that state anyway.

So excuse me if I don't trust the judgment of West Virginia to tell me who can win an election.

Looking back the way I wrote that post was kind of dickish, I shouldn't have wrote it that way; my apologies to you for that.

But I do strongly believe it is time to move on. You had every right to support Hillary during the primary, all I'm saying is it's time to admitt that this primary is now over and move on to the general election so we can destroy McCain and take out a few of his right wing buddies in the house and senate. The sooner we stop talking about Hillary staying in this race the sooner we can start concentrating on that.

156. I hate to break it to you but Hillary needed to win by a larger
margin of victory in WV than she did. She needed 75% of the votes in WV. Not only that but she needed to win every primary left by 75% to catch Obama in pledged delegates. Since she didn't get that 75% in WV she now has to win the remaining primaries by more than 75%.

So like I said, do all the celebrating you want but you're only fooling yourself. Hillary is going to the convention in second place in the pledged delegate race. That's not an insult it's a fact.

you can't read my mind, nor do you know ANYTHING about the reasons for my support. All you're doing is substituting what I believe with your own biased ridicule.

There is only one reality in this race relevant to it's continuing. Neither candidate has achieved enough delegates to win the nomination by votes alone. Obama acknowledges that.

And I'll celebrate when I damn well please. I don't need any advice on that from some anonymous poster dishing out ridicule. You people are amazing in how you speak to total strangers like you're some authority figure in their lives. Why don't you concentrate on how you conduct yourself and leave the decisions about my own conduct to me.

Better question, where is your own thread promoting your own choice in this primary? It's hilarious to find you stuck on this thread, ridiculing me for ignoring your candidate. You seem to be in earnest. Get on with it then. I anxiously await your efforts on behalf of your candidate. Judging from your enthusiasm for telling me what I should do with my own time and efforts, I can just imagine the parade of threads from you in elevation of your candidate, graced with your own special brand of promotion and advocacy.
