OH THIS IS RICH! Latest Clinton Ad Uses Newspaper Clipping on TROOPERGATE!
Edited on Sun May-11-08 08:34 PM by berni_mccoy
They couldn't actually find a newspaper clipping that was titled what they wanted ("Obama Attacks Clinton gas tax plan"), so they made one up... but they attached the headline to a Troopergate article! LOL!

Here is a screen capture from the downloaded hi-res copy from Clinton's website:

I noticed because I wanted to read the article and several words/phrases were quite readable. Then I saw it: "Troopergate" not once, but twice, sticking out like a sore thumb! Then I could read several other phrases:
"had notarized a written statement signed by the governor's former communications director.. whether he has a private attorney to represent him in the Troopergate scandal."

" 'It is their job to do what they do'... said of investigators. 'It is my job to cooperate, which is exactly what I have done. I have answered all the questions over and over.'"

See for yourself. Here is a link to the ad from Clinton's website: http://www.hillaryclinton.com/video/182.aspx

Note: For those not familiar with Troopergate, see Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troopergate

Here is the summary:
Troopergate is the popular name of an alleged scandal involving allegations by two Arkansas state troopers that they arranged sexual liaisons for then-governor Bill Clinton. The allegations by state troopers Larry Patterson and Roger Perry were first reported by David Brock in the American Spectator in 1993. The story mentioned a woman named Paula, a reference to Paula Jones.

This is utterly despicable. Is grossly misleading and Hillary's campaign should have their feet held to the fire a little bit for this one.

140. The Original Article is here
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/2007/12/18/2007-12-18_gov_spitzer_aides_mum_on_private_lawyer_-3.html

ALBANY - Gov. Spitzer and his aides won't tell New Yorkers whether he has a private attorney to represent him in the Troopergate scandal.

At a tense press conference at the state Capitol on Monday, Spitzer also refused to discuss the parallel probes by the Albany district attorney's office and the state Public Integrity Commission, insisting, "I have answered all these questions at length."

"Obviously, we are cooperating fully," he said.

"It is their job to do what they do," Spitzer said of investigators. "It is my job to cooperate, which is exactly what I have done. I have answered all the questions, over and over."

But Senate Investigations Committee Chairman George Winner (R-Elmira) said the governor was engaging in "more stonewalling" by refusing to tell the public whether he has retained a private attorney.

"This man is incapable of leveling with anyone," added Winner, whose committee has met stiff resistance from the administration on its subpoenas seeking e-mails and other documents relating to the effort by Spitzer aides to discredit Senate GOP leader Joe Bruno.

Spitzer did acknowledge, as reported in yesterday's Daily News, that his office received a new subpoena from Albany County District Attorney David Soares in the reopened investigation into the scandal.

Meanwhile, The News learned that the administration's chief counsel, David Nocenti, a witness in the Troopergate affair, has hired Albany lawyer Peter Moschetti, and another high-ranking Spitzer cabinet member, Sean Patrick Maloney, has retained Manhattan lawyer Bart Schwartz.

211. Mort Sahl said something interesting on KO the other night....
They were talking about figuring out why people do things (I think that was the context). Mort Sahl said:

(loose quote) "Well, sometimes you have to look at it another way. Bill Clinton makes all these gaffes on the campaign traal, and people ask, "He wants his wife to be president, why does he make so many blunders that hurt her chances?" What you have to do is step back and ask, is what I assume he really wants--is that REALLY what HE wants?"

When we open our minds to the possibility that what someon should be really wanting may not be what he really wants, Bill's blunders on the campaign trail start to make sense.

Using a tropergate article is such a blunder, and exactly one of th issues the Clintons DON'T want brought up.

So we ask ourselves, "Obviously the Clinton staffer who put up that article really wants Clinton to win. So why would they make such a bonehead mistake?" What we need to do is step back and ask ourselves, "WHatI assume the Clinton staffer really wants, is that REALLY what HE/SHE wants?

So if we throw aside the assumption and ask ourselves "Is what we think the staffer wants REALLY what HE/SHE wants, we can see that perhaps it isn't what the staffer wants. Perhaps this staffer wants the campaign over, and is nuding it along by an "oops" mistake.

The video every SuperDelegate should see

CBS News tonight was brutal to Hillary. It compiled a bunch of the press coverage - again, brutal. Worst of all, they quote one of Hillary's own top strategists who says he told her (and then told the media he told her - nice) "you can't win this nomination." I think this last point is the most significant. Hillary's own senior staff is leaking information to the media to sabotage her campaign. That's how bad things have gotten, that's how bad she has gotten. It's yet another sign that she needs an intervention, fast.

...above the article, it says "Clinton aides admit it won't do much for you but would help her politically"

I've done some video editing and I know how deliverate everything is. There is no way any video editor would put in the troopergate article on accident, so i figured there were other pro-Obama parts to the Ad.

Maybe he/she sees the campaign going down the tubes, the debt piled up and suspects that he/she might have a hard time cashing that next paycheck if it actually ever comes and slipped that graphic in as sort of a middle finger to the campaign.

They've clearly done some weird editing or folding of the original. Is there a website where you can find a .pdf or image of the original page? Or anyone at a library with it on file? It's only 5 months old, might be around somewhere?

why not just paste it over an article at least dealing with the gas tax subject?

It's another indication that her campaign isn't as sharp as it should be.

They took a newspaper article on troopergate and redacted the original headline to read "Obama attacks Clinton's gas tax plan" and used it in the ad for candidate Clinton?

Is that some odd subliminal message the ad folks were trying to get out there?

How will Hillary and her supporters try to blame this one on Obama?

Obama attacks Clinton's gas tax plan

By DAVID ESPO and BETH FOUHY, Associated Press Writers Sat May 3, 4:36 PM ET

INDIANAPOLIS - Broadening his attack, Barack Obama said Saturday that Hillary Rodham Clinton's support for a summertime break from the federal gasoline tax symbolizes a candidacy consisting of "phony ideas, calculated to win elections instead of actually solving problems."

Not so, the former first lady told a campaign audience as the next round of primaries approached. Obama is "attacking my plan to try to get you some kind of break this summer," she said.

Locked in a Democratic presidential race for the ages, Clinton and Obama campaigned across Indiana and North Carolina at the same time they competed in Guam's caucuses and added to their convention delegate totals in several states.

In all, four delegates were at stake in Guam half a world away from the U.S. mainland. But given the closeness of the race, both candidates made an effort to win.

62. Someone got lazy...
I'm sure the orders were to make that look like a legitimate newspaper article.

So, they lifted the headline from a real article and pasted in their own.

Why on earth didn't this person just write a short article--which would take about 10 minutes, and use
a font that looks like newspaper copy?

Very, very bizarre!

The Spitzer story wasn't even in the headlines during the Indiana primary, so whomever did this had
to go back weeks for that Spitzer article. Really weird.

Makes you wonder if it wasn't deliberate.

"Ipsum dolor.." something or other.

had they left that, it would have been lazy, but easy to say, "oops, we sent the early layout draft by accident!"

Instead, it's a mangled/folded/slightly edited real article on a Spitzer scandal from 2007!

75. GOV SPITZER, AIDES MUM ON PRIVATE LAWYER HIRE IN TROOPERGATE SCANDAL
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/2007/12/18/2007-12-18_gov_spitzer_aides_mum_on_private_lawyer_-3.html

Nocenti had notarized a written statement signed by Darren Dopp, the governor's former communications director. Sources say Soares is trying to determine if Dopp has made false statements.

Spitzer, a former criminal prosecutor, balked at releasing a copy of the subpoena that Soares directed to his administration, saying, "I'm not sure what the rules are with respect to that."

Asked why Spitzer refuses to say whether he has a lawyer, the governor's spokesman, Errol Cockfield, said, "It would be inappropriate to comment while there are ongoing investigations."

99. I'm guessing Spitzer's name would have jumped right out under the headline
But they left Troopergate (anyone in political campaigns should have known about BOTH Troopergates), and a Google search of the other names leads right to the Spitzer story, and for that matter, as the OP points out, the text skips in parts. So this isn't just glueing the correct headline to the wrong text - something more involved at work!

And yeah, that approval message at the end :o

152. They also changed the first line
The original article: "Nocenti had notarized" changed to "Noc the had notarized"

I noticed that before I noticed Spitzer since I started to try to read the article and it made no sense.

The article has not only been edited, but has been rearranged in the video. The "Nocenti had notarized" sentence appears in the middle of the original article - not the first sentence. In the original article it also appears after the text that is column 2 of the video article. The last line of the video article is also identical to the first - except that they didn't edit Nocenti's name in the second copy of that line.

They specifically put the word "troopergate" as the first word of the third column? It's actually in a very noticeable position.

204. Don't know about that - but a long list of changes
Here is a list of the changes I found that were made to the original article http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/2007/12/18/2007-12-18_gov_spitzer_aides_mum_on_private_lawyer_-3.html (in addition to the title):

1. The byline, date, city, and first nine words of the article were replaced by the first sentence of the 9th paragraph of the original article, and made to appear as if the first sentence of 9th paragraph and the last 14 words of the first sentence of the 1st paragraph were all one paragraph.

2. Within the first (new) paragraph: Replaced “Nocenti had” with “Noc the had.”

3. Within the first (new) paragraph: Replaced “Darren” with “scandal.”

4. Within the first (new) paragraph: Replaced “Dopp” had with “Dthe.”

5. Within the first paragraph in the second column: Replaced “Spitzer” with “withzer.”

6. Within the first paragraph of the third column: Replaced “Moschetti” with “questions.”

7. Within the first paragraph of the third column: Replaced “Spitzer” with “member.”

8. Within the first paragraph of the third column: Replaced “Schwartz” with “member.”

Since don’t have a copy of the printed version of the original article, I can’t tell if the columns were rearranged to place Troopergate prominently at the bottom of the first column and the top of the third column, or whether they appeared that way originally.

This hack job was no accident!

116. Several posters on Kos have noted
That the Ad people had to work to get the text that they did. They edited the original article and covered up Spitzer's name. Several have noted that they didn't want to use the REAL Gas Tax article with the matching headline because it makes Obama look good. I have no idea what the Ad maker's intent was, but whatever it was, Clinton's Campaign looks completely stupid in the end.

You're right about the work. It was intentional. When I first saw "troopergate" I laughed very hard

I think that "we" should take every opportunity to mess with "them" in the media - sneak the truth in,
commit acts of DADA activism, treat the propaganda machine to some of its own tricks.

This was a great find, congrats!

138. Ha!
Graphic designers are notoriously bad spellers. They're not illiterate but they tend to think in pictures as opposed to words.

My guess is the designer had that Spitzer story saved as a screen grab and named it something innocuous like "storytext". Then, when it came time to make this video, the text was cropped and pasted into the faux article graphic. He/She was likely more concerned with re-creating authenticity than rendering that text unreadable.

Clueless and tin-eared. Gotta love Team Hillary.

141. URGENT: Read "Blinded by the Right," by David Brock. Brock wrote the Troopergate story.
Edited on Mon May-12-08 06:04 AM by Perry Logan
Democrats have got to realize that all the stuff about Bill Clinton was made up!

Every day at DU, I see Democrats repeating lies that were perpetrated against the Clintons in the 90's. They sound like so many Republicans, repeating disinformation as fact.

A lot of the anti-Clintonism we see at DU is based on a multimillion-dollar smear campaign which happened during the 90's. This means that the Republicans are still hurting us--years after the fact.

I hate to see Democrats dissing their own people, based on lies the Republicans made up. David Brock's "Blinded by the Right," and another book, "The Hunting of the President" (also a documentary movie) can help clear your mind of this damaging disinformation.

David Brock is the guy who made up the Troopergate story. He was hired to make up lies about the Clintons. He then had a change of heart, and wrote "Blinded by the Light" as an expose of the Right's smear campaign against Bill Clinton and his family.

Brock now works with "Media Matters," an excellent site that debunks corporate media distortions:

The post is about Clinton's campaign inflicting a nearly fatal wound on themselves for no good reason.

Someone in the Ad group is completely upset with the campaign. This was intentional damage done by an internal member of the team.

182. Sorry Perry, but history now shows how plausible Troopergate was
After Monica Lewinsky, and Bill Clinton's careful, Attorney Generalesquw "What your Definition of "is" is, makes me tend to be skeptical about how horribly smeared the Clintons were. There were a great many more allegations which were many times more serious than Troopergate for the Clintons. The links to Money Laundering, BCCI, the takeover of the Arkansas Attorney General's office by none other than Blill Clinton, and the now familiar abilty to quash legal agencies from investigating crimes by not allowing them to pursue the evidence.

The Clinton's are a powerful force, but that power comes solely from the backing of Corporate fund in order to make money. They care nothing for the earth or the common american.

All of that smells a lot like what the Bush administration and his Alberto Gonzales debacle. Bush merely picked up and flew with the mechanisms that Bill Clinton put in place.

I used to support the Clintons a long time ago, before our country was contaminated by his Corporate cronies implanted into APHIS, the USDA, and the SEC.

I am really looking forward to the court case between Peter Paul and Hilary Clinton, which is so hush hush, one would think this landmark case did not exist.

As one Video Editor, adrian pan, on Kos Noted (http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/5/11/22738/6747/648/513964) :
I'm a video editor, and there is no question the video editors, for whatever purpose, tried to sabotage the ad. But that's not the main problem.
These ads, upon completion, are viewed and Oked by numerous most senior of her staff, and likely including Hillary herself. It's incomprehensible these 2 huge materialistic errors would slip their eye. We're not talking a shitty youtube preview here. The ad was previewed and watched at HD resolution on a big widescreen monitor....

Gov. Spitzer, aides mum on private lawyer hire in Troopergate scandal

Nocenti had notarized a written statement signed by Darren Dopp, the governor's former communications director. Sources say Soares is trying to determine if Dopp has made false statements.

213. So, what happened to this?
If this kind of thing appeared in an Obama ad, it would be replayed ad nauseum on all channels.
