What Should We Say to Hillary Supporters Considering Supporting McCain?
This is a serious question - most likely for Hillary supporters who support the nominee. Right now, as long as there's an Obama avatar next to your name, I don't think you'll convince anybody of anything. Besides the useless bullying and gloating, I've also seen some calm, rational arguements that have been met back with hostility.

I guess the best way to know what the dejected Hillary supporters want us to do is to ask, so here goes...

4. I know you're calling for a rational response, and I'll try to contribute,
which is not to say that "Eat shit and die" would be my first reaction for any progressive threatening to bolt to McCain.

The more diplomatic approach might be to force that person to defend McCain's extremely Far Right voting record on key issues of concern to progressives.

If they are confronted with the reality that McCain represents the antithetical viewpoint, they look very foolish for the impulse to support him. We still can't force them to vote blue, but we will have made it clear that under honest scrutiny and a direct examination of his voting record, there's no sound reason to cast a vote for John McCain.

8. Don't ask on an anonymous chat board. How would you know who you are talking to?
All the Clinton supporters I know in real life are going to vote Obama in the GE, absolutely. Some have already told me they will work in his GE campaign and to call them to volunteer after the primaries are over.

And I know they aren't operation chaos folks.

However, on a chat board, who knows?

11. It's a puzzle to me.
Even at my highest anger point with Clinton - and remember I am a Kerry fan and she blew me away in 2006 when she threw him under the bus, and never made up for that - but even still as angry as I am with things she has said and her campaign has allegedly done -

with all that, I NEVER, not once, seriously thought of voting for McCain.

The guy is with Bush on all the stuff that matters to Democrats and progressives. He is anti-choice, anti- women's rights. He called his own wife a "c***" in public. Even on issues where he looks good at first glance (or at least tolerable), such as environment or campaign finance, a slight scratch of the surface shows there's no good substance there.

This is why I find any threat by a Clinton supporter to vote for McCain just mind-boggling. Of course I know there are a few trolls in the mix (I'm not stupid and neither are you, dear reader), but that doesn't account for all of them.

*** ALL THAT SAID: ***

It is similarly mind-boggling to me that some alleged Obama supporters insist on posting divisive, flamebait CRAP that serves no purpose to inform or enlighten or convince, but rather can only piss off some people we need as allies. (The Hitler video is an extreme example. Take pity on the mods at least and please just STOP with that shit. You know they will need to lock it but they already have their hands full, so it will stay active and do its damage for awhile. Sheesh.)

13. Obama may not be who you love, but what about McCain do you like?

McCain is:

more war
more tax cuts for the rich
more conservative judges
more being hated around the world
more crappy economy
more of everything you hate about this administration

Think it over - I'm voting for Hillary if she's the nominee. Everyone on DU have had their hearts broken over many elections, we know how it feels.

27. Exactly right.
But without the leading questions. "Convince me to vote for McCain."

People can talk themselves out of doing stupid things better than anyone else can.

Granted, this tactic works much better in 1:1 interactions.

17. Well, I have a Russ Feingold avatar below my name.
If you are a Democrat and do not support our nominee and McCain is elected, what will you say to the loved ones of our soldiers who will continue to be killed in Iraq and then Iran? What will you say about the tens of thousands of innocent civilians--men, women, children, babies--who will continue to be killed, maimed, made homeless refugees in Iraq and then in Iran? What will you say about the profiteering vampire of war that continues to drain our country's blood both literally and financially? What will you say when McCain names more justices to the Supreme Court who will continue to gut our Constitution for decades and relieve us of our personal freedoms?

This is a real simple concept: the next President of the United States will either be John McCain or a Democrat. Any Democrat is better than John McCain. We do not want Bush, Term 3 and the continued rape of our country. This election and its profound impact on our country and its future is much, much more important than your hurt feelings or my hurt feelings. We need to stand and fight together because this is a pivotal point in American history.

Support the Democratic nominee!

18. I can see how you can mistake the policies
of Clinton and McCain...they are so similar! :sarcasm: :eyes:
Sure....McCain is a warmonger, I guess Clinton is one too. McCain supports restrictions on women regarding their personal reproductive choices, I guess Clinton does too. Their choice in Supreme court justices will be exactly the same, you have no worries or concerns. Their policies are so simular, the choice will be easy for you...right?

I guess it's personal, you didn't get your way, so take your toys and go home...for the short period you still have one.

The nastiness of his supporters would be secondary to that - more of a general symptom (though a significant one).

For those thusly turned off, I really doubt there is much that can be said.

15. Let them go...
I don't want people like that in the Democratic party.

There is a cancer in our democracy. It spread through the Republican party via the neocons.
Then it metastasized in the Democratic party--within the DLC ranks. We have to let them go.

Personally, I'm happy to have those people cross the other side. It's like chemotherapy
for our party. If they truly will vote for a 100 more years of war with Iraq and support
war with Iran and the continuation of the PNAC plan--then I say we're lucky they're gone.

The true Progressives in the Dem party need to fight like hell and go up against these
neocons masquerading as Dems. We need to galvanize, organize and work for Obama, in
order to end this nightmare.

They've got the corporate media on their side, the corporations, a majority of the Republicans and
a good chunk of the Democrats. We've got the truth on our side--and we've got each other.

This is not a surprise that they're doing this. Press on.

28. Honestly
Unless your willing to put on the lipstick and kiss their ass I doubt there is anything you can say to them to make them do the right thing. It seems that is what they want. We have already been warned that we need to be nice to them or else. I don't kiss anyones ass and if they are willing to vote for McCain out of spite then screw them. We need to weed those kind of people out of the party anyways because at the end of the day their dislike for Obama goes a lot deeper than folks on DU pissing them off. They can tell us all that until the cows come home but they are the ones with the issues. People's lives depend on this election and some of them want to act like assholes by voting for a third term of Bush, for what? Naw.... their issues with Obama go a lot deeper than us pissing them off on DU and I refuse to kiss the ass of such people.

"Yes, please join Rush and McCain asap. The train has left. Catch it."

Why waste a moment arguing with anyone who paraded as a Hillary supporter but thinks McCain is morally acceptable when there are millions of other people to energize? I refuse to spin my wheels in Operation Chaos or Operation Iran Next War.

Most Democrats who were genuinely supporting Hillary know how Primaries work and aren't asking to be convinced. People threatening to support McCain aren't even worth our time. The majority of Hillary's supporters will do the right thing without convincing and the rest are going to do what they were planning to do all along. There's nothing you or I can do to change it. My answer remains "Yes, please join Rush and McCain asap. The train has left. Catch it." We need to quit wasting time with anyone whose fundamental goals don't merge with democratic ideals and spend it more productively.

In the time it takes to argue with a McCain zombie, we could register 10 new voters or bring back 5 Independents who left over the DLC and the war.

When I see the kind of racist crap posted at sites like www.HILLARYIS44.ORG, all I want to do is buy such hateful people bus tickets.
