1. Years ago in Seattle
there was a bank -- I forget the name but I THINK it was Peoples Bank.

The tag line was

Member FDIC and The Human Race

It gave me chills whenever I saw it.

Agree. We're all one.

2. You're more right than you know. "Race" has no genetic basis...
...and you may share closer genes with a person living on the other side of the globe than the same-race guy who lives next door.

What we see as "black and white" is ALL about pigmentation, which is a response to climate and sun and is literally only skin-deep--scientifically speaking, race doesn't exist.

6. not necessarily true. there's only one human *species*
Edited on Fri May-09-08 12:26 PM by enki23
and not particularly a genetically diverse species. but how many "races" there are simply depends on how you like your taxonomy. there are genetic differences between groups. they just aren't always the obvious ones. skin color, for instance, can be a very misleading feature. black aborigines, for example, are much more closely related to asians than to africans. and europeans fall in somewhere, genetically, as a hybrid of african and asian genetic makeup.

in a crude sense, you could possibly draw a line from africa, through europe and the middle east, to asia, and then onward to australia and north america. white europeans would be somewhere near the middle, possibly bracketed on both ends by different populations of dark-skinned people.

7. yep. And there is only one social class and only one religion and only one culture.
Race is a social construct rather than a scientific one. But, right or wrong, that doesn't mean it doesn't have implications for how people treat each other and the choices they make.

9. I believe Obama understands much about this types of divisions
yet he holds out hope that we can live above these types of issues.

That we all recognize them for what they are, merely ways to keep us apart
from each other so that we do not reach for higher goals that we all can share
like health care, education, security when we are elderly, assistance to our
soldiers when they return from war, a strong economy for all, to rebuild the
middle class to its strength of better days, to help the lower classes to reach
for better days, there are so many issues that we all share that need some
serious work so we need to lay aside our individual beliefs and work on those
that we share first.

These are the concerns that shape the Democratic Party and our everyday lives.

I believe Obama is working on uniting us behind these issues so that for once
they will be resolved to work best for all Americans. So America lives up to
its promise to all Americans beyond any divisive issues.

10. And when you are presented with a "race" question on a survey/poll,
be sure to check "other," and if space is provided, write "human."
