How exactly is Hillary going to break up OPEC?
Edited on Mon May-05-08 04:54 PM by Paint It Black
Sure, it would be great to see OPEC broken up. If they were US companies operating under US law, they would constitute an illegal monopoly, with their price fixing schemes.

But HOW? It's one thing to come up with these pie-in-the-sky ideas. But I'm curious how she actually plans to do this.

I don't know about the rest of you, but the idea of going through another OPEC oil embargo doesn't really appeal to me very much. As much as it sucks using their oil, and as much as we need to start developing alternative sources of energy, we're pretty much stuck with them for the time being. Why in the hell would she do something so foolish as to promise to "break up" OPEC? I can't imagine that OPEC would take such comments very lightly.

2. Obliterate it?
I hadn't heard that, but what good will that do? We are still not refining enough oil to meet demand.

17. That's not what she said
Her words from the press release were "Pressuring OPEC to increase oil production, including by filing a WTO complaint against OPEC countries."

Now, I would also like to know how her team plans to use the WTO (since my understanding is that energy is exempt). Could be by threatening to deny some oil producing nations membership in the organization.

US Sens Propose Anti-OPEC Bill That Would Force Trade Talks

A handful of U.S. Senators on Monday proposed a bill that threatens a trade dispute with members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, or OPEC, if the group doesn't stop "its anti-competitive practices and illegal export quotas on oil."

The bill would require the U.S. Trade Representative to initiate talks with countries that were members of the World Trade Organization and OPEC. If negotiations failed, the U.S. would request the WTO convene a dispute settlement panel to judge the case.

If the case were decided in the U.S.'s favor, OPEC would be required to cease its illegal operations or the U.S. would be able to impose trade remedies, Lautenberg's office said.

OPEC is made up of 13 of the world's largest oil-producing nations, eight of which are also WTO members, including Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Qatar, Nigeria and Indonesia. Iraq, Iran, Libya and Algeria are seeking admission into the WTO.

Also in April, senators said they would push two other anti-OPEC bills - one requiring the Justice Department to file an anti-competition case against the cartel and another that threatens to void any planned arms deals with several of the OPEC countries.

Summer 2006 Chevron tv ad:

"Some way we've used half the worlds oil by 2012, some say we already have."

Hillary needs to get in touch on her energy policy.

All I want to do from time to time is ensure that people get accurate takes... and don't go off half cocked (while others follow suit).

As I've mentioned many times, neither candidate has a responsible energy policy. And unfortunately, as many writers have noted: anyone who did, probably wouldn't fare much better than Jimmy Carter in 1980.

Based on current production data, global monthly peak occurred in January 2008.

See: The Record Falls - January 2008 is the New World Record for Crude Oil (plus Condensate) Production

http://www.theoildrum.com/node/3835

Of course, as a poster in that article pointed out- yearly production is probably a better measure than month to month spikes- and at any rate, there's little doubt that we've reached a supply plateau that cannot keep up with increased demand over time.

23. A realistic energy policy means certain defeat, to paraphrase
A sad commentary on the country as I consider this is the most important issue there is, and without some realistic planning...well, don't get me started.

I am enjoying my garden more and more.
