What would a documentary discussing voter suppression by Democrats do to the Democratic Party?
Edited on Thu May-01-08 03:59 PM by Skwmom
It seems that black voters have been targeted in more than one state during this Democratic Primary b/c the majority of black voters are no longer backing the Democratic Establishment candidate (Clinton).

So I ask, what impact would a documentary depicting voter suppression (by Democrats) on the most loyal part of the Democratic base have on the Democratic Party?

The actions might have been by one campaign team but I think the whole Democratic Party will pay the price b/c people are taking note that the Democratic Leadership is failing to FORCEFULLY DENOUNCE such actions. Instead they let it continue state after state.

This is much more than about November and the Democratic Leadership better come out forcefully if they are to have a prayer of retaining the SIGNIFICANT black voting block they have enjoyed all these years.

I'm basing this on what I'm hearing from my friends but I don't think they are in the minority. Just because the MSM doesn't talk about this issue doesn't mean that people aren't.

1. The Greens will run a black candidate this year.
I don't think Hillary will get the nomination but if she does it could be the final unraveling of the Democratic party coalition.

2. I've seen mild mannered people become livid over this situation.
Why the Democratic Leadership sits quietly on the sidelines while letting the Clintons destroy the Democratic Party (which has just recovered from their last destruction) is beyond me.

I said

"If Clinton unfairly usurps the nomination at Convention... put out the tentstakes, because you'll only have TEN weeks to put an enlarged campaign together. I'd like to send you a handfull of cash, but I'll just bring my tambourine."

She emailed back

"Bring your tambourine, baby."

She's yummy. I think the world of her.

8. That black candidate is Cynthia McKinney
Who essentially had her political career terminated by Atlanta's black political establishment because they found her to be an embarrassment. There is a reason that Hank Johnson now holds her Congressional seat. It should also be pointed out that her father was essentially pushed out of office because he had a penchant for making anti-Semitic comments. Both of them are from the Earl Hillard/Ike Brown/Eddie Jordan wing of black politics as opposed to the Obama/Thurbert Baker/Harold Ford/Shirley Franklin/Jim Clyburn wing.

Money will actually come from Atlanta to permanently end her career if she actually starts gaining traction, and a fair amount will be from the Atlanta black establishment. It should also be pointed out that this woman is also a political scion. Her career only exists because of her father. In terms of a third party candidate, you couldn't find an easier one to rip to shreds.

I was happy when Majette beat her the first time, happier still when Johnson won, because her kind of politics wherein she tries to divide everyone all of the time is not what is needed in the South.

McKinney will be a nonfactor because she has too many enemies and unlike Nader or Perot, she has major character flaws that would come out. The money that would come from Atlanta in 527s specifically against her if she acutally looks like she can pull of some percentage points will be unbelievable and most of these ads will be as nasty as they can get.

3. Saw this somewhere else. What proof do you have of black voter suppression?
There is no way the media can hide this. Please present something. Anything.

I am a retired voting rights activist. I am very curious.

4. No way the media can hide this? Like they covered it in 2000?
Oh yeah, the black college students were protesting in Florida and the CNN anchor makes a comment about the screaming students but never follows up on what they were protesting (the fact that their polling place was taken from them).

Have you been following this primary? There have been plenty of posts about dirty tricks involving voter suppression (now the investigation in NC which CANNOT be explained away for it IS BLATANT black voter suppression).

6. Voter suppression in 2000 was very well covered. I was involved then. Many lawsuits.
But where are there incidents of black voters in these past primaries being suppressed? People of any race or age standing in lines to vote and being denied cannot be hidden from the press. Give examples. Sorry, you cannot claim voter suppression without anecdotal evidence.

Black voters are being denied their vote in North Carolina? How so? You talking about robo-calls? How do they "suppress black voters" right to go to the polling place and vote next Tuesday?

These suspicious pressures happen in many states and in many elections. Voters should never do what an anonymous phone call tells them to do. Call and get the facts from your local registry of voters.

Stay away from TPM and dKos and other frenetic political hacks.

7. So what was the PURPOSE of the robo-calls?
Edited on Thu May-01-08 05:03 PM by Skwmom
Voters should never do what an anonymous phone calls tells them to do? These were calls from an organization with TIES to the DEMOCRATIC PARTY. So if a voter is "stupid" enough to fall for it, I guess it's the voter's fault? Wow, that sounds like the Republican argument in 2000. I guess you did learn a lot.

Again what was the PURPOSE of the robo-calls? Did the group just make the phony calls for the fun of it? Sounds like more Clinton logic to me or just another display of the utter contempt the Clinton gang feels for average Americans (you are stupid and will buy any lie - no matter how ludicrous).

Broken machines in Philly and not enough machines when they KNEW their would be LONG LINES. Hmmmm.... that sounds like the Republicans in Florida in 2000 and in OH in 2004. Yeah the Clintons sure learned a lot, just not any of the right stuff.

Posters can deny what is happening until the cows come home. It won't stop the truth from coming out.

Frenetic political hacks? Well what exactly do you call the politicians and their political hacks which carry out their despicable deeds? What do you call democraticunderground?

So you want to spin it as "these suspicious pressures?" Please develop a conscience or some common sense (though my money is on you really needing the former).

9. The purpose of robo-calls? I don't know. But before you do your documentary...
....you had better find out. Documentaries present facts. You don't have any.

Or hire Michael Moore. His documentaries win awards and he isn't too fussy about the facts.
