But I also heard Iraq AND the concerns of African Americans addressed at this rally, and in what I thought were the right ways.
I saw enthusiastic African Americans in attendance, happy about what they heard. And today I saw a massive swell of Democratic support in North Carolina that I haven't seen in years and years. This was a landmark day in the history of the North Carolina Democratic party, without a doubt.
Had the event gone on for another hour, I'm sure that time would have then permitted those issues that you would have liked to have seen more fully addressed to have been covered in the proper depth.
But considering the wilting 100-degree heat, and the myriad issues that WERE appropriately and correctly addressed (including Iraq and issues of concern to minorities), I'd have to call today's rally in Raleigh a huge success, not only for progressives in North Carolina, but across America.
Maybe I'm a 35-year-old youthful idealist, but I saw and heard quite a lot to be excited about at this afternoon's rally.
Yes, the Iraq debacle and the continuing plight of minorities, particularly as it relates to disenfranchisement, are very significant issues. I believe that the Kerry/Edwards ticket will continue to deal with them in the right way as the campaign continues.
But let's not forget the importance of those messages you've heard again and again--that's the heart and soul of this party. And we saw it presented in its Sunday best and received with a truly rapturous reception today. Sure, it could have been just standard stump-speech recycling--but the 2.5-times-larger-than-expected crowd at today's rally were hanging on every word, and loved what they heard.
Not only do I believe that Kerry and Edwards will do a plainly better job addressing the issues you raise than Smirk and Snarl--they'll not just do it better, but they'll also do it RIGHT.
