Newt Gingrich just totally silenced the crowd at The Daily Show while Jon was trying to defend...
...the whole Obama/Rev Wright controversy.

Jon was doing his best to say "...what's the big deal...?" But check out the replay at 1:00am EDT, the silence was deafening.

11. I'm not sure either, I try not to listen too carefully to what he says...
...as usually what my former, so-called "representative" says is totally BS, and this time was no exception (that I didn't listen carefully), but I did notice how silent the crowd was near the end of the interview.

I'm going to have to watch it again to see if he made any good points.

Kind of tough being a progressive antagonist here in "God's Country", eh? :hi:

37. Newt has been on The View and radio shows all over country stumping for Hillary
now that's sick.

I heard him on a morning show that airs across NC today at 9:30

and he was on the Alan Colmes (another hillary supporter big surprise) show tonight.

He's been going everywhere trying desperately to be the authority on
what good dems are.

Sheesh, the neo cons are trying to completely take over the Dems.

25. I think they were all waiting for Jon to zing him, but Jon let him go on
with his wormtongue imitation too long, IMO. Newt was saying how important Wright was, moreso than Hagee, yada yada yada, and then of course there's Obama's association with William Ayers -- so very bad yada yada yada.

I kept thinking "Jon! Shut him down!" And I would imagine the audience was thinking the same.

Jon finally said something about if you played six degrees of separation with all the candidates, all sorts of interesting people pop up.

Newt is quite the effective concern troll.

29. They were silent because they were watching the disheartening difference between power and hope.
Gingrich made Stuart look naive, not because Stuart actually is naive, but because Gingrich is the dispassionate incarnation of the carnivorous cynicism of American politics since 1973. He made very plain the intention of the GOP, the media, and the powerful minority whose views and interests they share to use Wright as a sledgehammer to smash Obama and his movement to smithereens. And it became clear that there is probably nothing Obama or his movement can do to stop them. The game is not played as Obama was trying to play it. Gingrich seemed genuinely surprised that anyone might hope for anything better from the system than personal attacks and barely sublimated racism.

But it's at least instructive to see it. You wouldn't see that clash between experience and innocence so starkly in any other venue in the media.

4. Boy, Newt is making the rounds today for Hillary...
This is unfuckingbelievable!

Newt was on "The View" this morning, spewing Hillary Clinton's talking points about
being ahead in the popular vote. Newt even dismissed the "smaller states and caucuses"

This is so unfucking real. God, what an insult this is to Democrats!

Why are the neocons schlepping for Hillary?

They are all over it! They're everywhere, leveraging HER and demonizing her opponent.

This is unprecedented!

I'm starting to believe that Richard Melon Scaiffe, is some kind of Wizard of Oz type character. You have
to visit him and pay homage--if you want him to release the hounds.

I swear--did she pay Scaiffe for some political hit-job services?

WTF? This is so blatant and obvious.

Attention neocons!!! Not all Democrats are as dumb as you assume!

9. She's The Perfect Dem Candidate For Neocons
If she gets the nomination, they can probably beat her:

"When a Democrat pretending to be a Republican runs against a Republican, the real Republican will win every time"
- Harry Truman

And if she *does* wins... they'll have a Neocon in the White House anyway.

And she is working with him on the Military Industrial Complex

"Unlike most members of the legislature, she has been in the White House," he said. "She's been consistently solid on the need to do the right thing on national defense."

34. Don't thy have some kind of rules for candidates?
There should be some basic rules of decency that they should follow.

If there are rules and she has not followed them, we need to know.

If there are rules that say "Thy can put down any Democrat and lift up any Republican that I want to as much as I want to" please let me know so that I will not give one more dime to the Democratic Party.

This is outrageous.

50. Bill Kristol has been doing the same....just yesterday or day before:
"Hillary is a good solid candidate."

It's a full court press against the newcomer, the outsider. Just more proof that is not dems vs gop, or left vs right. It's those with money and power against those without. And there are plenty of dems that are just fine with concentration of wealth and power into the hands of fewer people....as long as they're one of the few.

The format of the program is so fast that he gets a pass from basically calling Obama an extremist and terrorist.

I emailed the host of the show and he apologized and thought it was appalling too, but not much he could do since Newt was only on for like a minute; pimping his book for the remaining 45 seconds. I was somewhat shocked he replied to my rather flamey email - let alone that he felt bad about it.

...circle of friends but you fail to mention that.

Also, Newt didn't "silence" the crowd with good point he silenced it with repeated RW points of 20 years while ignoring Stewarts point that McSame looked for Hagee and Parsley.

Also, Newt said if a white pastor said the things Wright said he'd be castrated in the media while ignoring the things Falwell, Parsley, Hagee and Robertson has already said.

Watch it again on a replay, I think it replays at 10:00am, 2:00pm and 8:00pm or catch it at this link about mid-day tomorrow at SpikeTV.com

63. That interview disturbed me deeply, for the reasons I wrote above.
Edited on Wed Apr-30-08 02:13 PM by BurtWorm
I'm still bothered by it. Jon Stewart, bless his heart, was trying to provoke some sense of shame in Gingrich on behalf of his cohort in politics and the “serious” media for trashing Obama while McCain gets a free ride for his associations with wingnut pastors and venal lobbyists.

I read Gingrich’s attitude as communicating something like, “But, Jon, please... McCain is a white Republican.” I mean, he didn’t say that, of course, but the subtext of his response was “This is America in 2008, Jon. We have different standards for Republicans and Democrats now--let alone for white men and black men. Do I really have to point that out to anybody? Isn’t that obvious? Were you expecting the rules to suddenly change now? Wake up: Why on earth would they?

It felt like the audience was witness to this sad conflict between hope and naked power in which, of course, naked power wins because it actually has guns and will use them.

57. Stewart didn't bring up the racist Bob Jones U. and fealty repukes pay to them.
and newt was there to start the republican spin. Obama is supposed to be scary because of Wright. JFK had to go up against baptists saying that the catholic church was the whore of Babylon (something many of them still think, according to their "left behind" ideas.) JFK, as was obvious, was in no way a religious person before he was an American leader.

this is what the opposition groups hope will taint the saint. but it ain't about saint. it's about getting rid of the Bush... taint. Inspiring some positive actions from Americans.

65. Obama supporters and those with good sense... don't be sucked into Right-wing talking points even
Edited on Wed Apr-30-08 02:17 PM by wowimthere
if it is a wannabe right winger. Some of the Clinton supporters want to drag you into the melee to keep the Wright discussion going. That's old politics. Newt Gingrich is responsible for this darkness. Why go to a video to see him? Turn the negativity lose. Don't watch the clip. It's how Wright got his start by the Neo-cons and the Republican wannabes. It's merely a distraction to divide Dems.

My suggestion... don't even watch the cable news when they want to go negative on Obama.

71. Why hasn't Hillary Clinton DENOUNCED and REJECTED supporters like Newt Gingrich?

I guess she shares the same views.
