Reverend Wright Reaction....
I thought the Wright interview on PBS was real good.

I thought the paster did a great job explaining his views and how they were taken out of context. I found it interesting that a supposed anti-american radical actually served in the Military for several years and assisted in an operation of President Lyndon Johnson. Perhaps if more people understood the history of this country, they wouldn't find some of his views offensive.

I can't wait to see how this latest interview will be "spun" by the mainstream media.

I started this thread because I just wanted to see the reaction from others who may have seen the PBS interview tonight.

His detractors look more and more foolish and simple minded.

2. Wright came across entirely different from the soundbites.
He is an elequant straight talking individual who understands the difference between patriotism and nationalism. I think I would have stayed at the church as well even if I did disagree with some statements. I think Wright said it best about the sound bites: "People who heard the whole sermon understood exactly what was being communicated. Those using soundbites for other purposes communicated exactly what they intended to."

4. People like Wright make this country great
This man has sacrificed for his country more than Cheney and Bush. This man has every right to be critical of America, especially when it comes to US foreign policy. Our chickens came home to roost on 9/11. Thank you Wright fore speaking the truth. I don't know a single Progressive that disagrees with the fact that out foreign policy lead to 9/11.

5. Haven't seen the interview but a thought crossed my mind
Most churches have a board of directors plus a vocal congregation not to mention one or two 'leaders' within the church. Had Rev. Wright been that bad he never would have lasted 20+ years. What little experience I have had in congregations makes me think if the pastor is out of time with his flock he does not last long.

7. It doesn't air here until Sunday so I'll have to wait to see it, but the
excerpts I saw on cable news disappointed me. I know the MSM always extracts the worst, but from what I saw so far, I'VE been doing a better job at explaining Rev. Wright's words than he did.

The really sad thing is that the majority of Americans don't watch PBS and will never see what you just did.

31. Yep. I already saw how they're twisting stuff from this
I watched the interview tonite and Wright more than impressed me -- his knowledge and wisdom were quite evident. I was happy they showed the entire context of the M$M soundbites. The whole interview was excellent.

Now the part they twisted: Wright said that Obama has to speak as a politician whereas Wright speaks as a pastor. This small tidbit wa lifted out and played on MSNBC earlier today. Andrea Mitchell then asked whoever she was talking to, "So do you agree with Rev Wright that Obama's speech was just more politics?" :banghead:

Now, what I think is that Wright should go on as many talk shows and venues as possible in the months ahead. I think it will show people A)he's not a scary black dude, B)they might actually get the context and history of what he said in those sound bites, and C) they'll get so used to seeing him their fear will dissipate just from familiarity, no matter how the media tries to keep twisting it.

the most damaging. Why not play this part?

That those sound bytes, those snippets were taken for nefarious purposes. That God can take that and do something very positive for it- with it. That, in Philadelphia, in response to the sound bytes, in response to the snippets, in Philadelphia Senator Obama made a very powerful speech in terms of our need as a nation to address the whole issue of race. That's something good that's already starting. That because of you guys playing these sound bytes now what's getting ready to happen as something very positive, and something very powerful that God can take what you meant to try to hurt somebody to help the nation come to grips with truth. To help a nation come to grips with miseducation. To help a nation come to grips with things we don't like to talk about. To help a nation--

Full transcript of the interview: http://stephencrosehome.blogspot.com/2008/04/full-transcript-of-moyers-wright.html

And getting back to the part they are excerpting. Who are we electing? We are electing a politician no matter who we vote for; Obama, Clinton, McCain. All Wright is saying is that he is a pastor, Obama is a politician. Its our minds who equate politician with lies. Its our minds who equate that politicians only say what they need to say to get elected and don't stand behind the meaning of their words. I thought that in this speech Obama eloquently did believe in what he said. Its just sad as a nation we haven't grown enough that he had to give it and that there are stupid voters and sleazy politicians who engage in this sound bite political game and persuade the stupid voters to think so simply on what to base their vote on.

Wright is right, we are a miseducated nation propped up by our "myths".

What the corporate media hacks, like the Tweety's, Joe(dead intern) Skanboro and ClintonNewsNetwork have done to Rev. Wright is criminal. That includes Miss Hillary Clinton(NeoCon-NY) and her lot. We all know why they did it, and Rev Wright made it CLEAR he knows why. Tonight any thinking person realizes what they have done to this man. You can see how John King spun it on CNN - horrible for Barack! Spin overdrive.

In this case the context of Wright's remarks really did matter. He was explaining how all governments fail in the eyes of God and that's why God damns America - it's government has failed its people by warring against the innocent, not helping the poor and so on.

Do you deny what they did with AA & syphilis (all the way in to the early 70's)? We don't know the extent of what our government is/has been capable of. But given the history - I can see why he would believe they have something to do with it. As it stands, the government allows our children to be guinea pigs for merck and other companies when it comes to vaccines (IE. Autism, seizures, etc). They refuse to recognize reports that products can poison and kill us, and tell us they're safe (BPA in plastics, Phathaltes in vinyl, plastics and even body care). Sorry - even if they didn't invent it, I have no doubt they experimented with it.

ETA in close: And I'm quite sure you've said some pretty ignorant things in your life. He who casts the first stone, and all that karma... But hey, good for you for pushing RW talking points to destroy Dem Candidates. Thumbs up to you!!! Rush would be so proud.

and the government was hiding the facts.

And being raised a Catholic, I was required to believe that the Pope was infallible.

I never believed in papal infallibility, and so of course never believed that priests were infallible. At one time I did believe that the government was covering up the truth about UFO's, though now i think that's just stupid.

Point being: Wright is not fallible as a person or a pastor, and is no less a person for being wrong on a point of fact.

32. A fine interview, glad to have the chance to see it
Rev. Wright is clearly a religious scholar who followed a calling that came to him early. He and his congregation built a loving, nurturing church that has been a blessing to their community. Bill Moyers is to be commended for presenting the context around the sound bites we've seen (three 30 sec clips from 35 years of preaching) and drew out the biblical/social framework that surrounds Rev. Wright's work.

Some very interesting video from PBS in '87 on Wright and his ministry. He's been recognized nationwide for his work for more than 20 years, before Obama joined his church. As he noted, might not all the effort to distort his views be due to the identity of one of his parishioners?

It's programs like this that let us see the promise of modern media and shines a laser focus on the circus that is the MSM.

April 25, 2008

Bill Moyers interviews the Reverend Jeremiah Wright in his first broadcast interview with a journalist since he became embroiled in a controversy for his remarks and his relationship with Barack Obama. Wright, who retired in early 2008 as pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, where Senator Obama is a member, has been at the center of controversy for comments he made during sermons, which surfaced in the press in March.

mattered in PA. Obama thought if Rev. Wright would disappear people would forget. So out of the woodwork comes Rev. Wright to put his spin on things. It doesn't really matter if we watch him or agree or disagree with him, the damage has already been done for probably 90% of the voters. No one is going to see that other than the party activists that already support Obama.

54. Moyers kindly made no mention whatsoever of the origin of AIDS or crack cocaine.

Mighty white of him I thought.

The reason to not ask Wright those questions is because he has no good answer.

Here's the Moyers/Wright transcript: http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/04252008/transcript1.html

65. You really believe everything your government tells you,,,
Don't you? Some people really believe that a lot of things started happening when Bush began his term, I have many questions about many things this government has done in the past and it didn't just begin 8 years ago. So if wright doesn't give the RIGHT answer then everyone should vote for Mccain or Hillary? RIGHT...

I feel privileged to have witnessed this interview.

Yes, Virginia, there IS intelligence on Planet Earth.

Obama is fortunate to have had this man as his pastor,

52. Bravo to Rev. Wright and Bill Moyers

Let me start with Bill Moyers..... superb, that is a journalist in every sense of the word. He should receive the highest award in his field for this interview.

He asked the tough questions and didn't step in so that we would not not be able to see and hear who the real Rev. Wright was -- not the FAUX Rev. Wright.

He let the light shine on the person interviewed and he was brilliant, simply brilliant!

He truly understood Religion and gifted us with his intellect.
To think that this great man should not be seen every day on a major "News" station is surreal.
Matthews and Company should crawl into a hole in the presence of this MASTER.
Bravo!

Bravo to Rev. Wright.... He gave us profound lessons on RELIGION,RACE,SOCIOLOGY,AMERICAN HISTORY, WORLD HISTORY, URBAN ISSUES and POLITICS. He is brilliant and when you hear him you understand why OBAMA wanted to learn about Christ from Rev. Wright.

I am Christian and as we say in the African American churches when we listen to a great sermon,
, " the good Rev. Wright took us to church this evening, YES.HE.DID!"

57. Too bad he is not preaching anymore. He is truly a wise man of God.
I was inspired by his words.
And saddened to face the truth of his sermon.

I am humbled.

67. and why were you...
"And saddened to face the truth of his sermon." Is it because you can't handle the truth, I am really surprise that a lot of people don't understand these facts in History. What I loved about it is that he gave a lot of people a short Bible lesson. Let's see how the rightwing spins this will they argue with the bible since they claim to be christians...

72. No, it is NOT because I can't handle the truth. It's because I'm ashamed of the truth that this
country has committed the atrocities it has committed.

Amazing, how I was trying to say something nice about the preacher
and you have turn it around and throw insults.

60. Wow...these are the only sermons I have ever heard that made me understand
why people are Christians.

I've gone to church before with friends, or with family, but I never got it.

We have done Rev. Wright such an injustice...words cannot express how horrified I feel at how he has been treated.

61. I sent PBS an email thanking them
This is the link: http://www.pbs.org/aboutsite/aboutsite_emailform.html

Having sent ABC my thoughts about them after the last Democratic debate, it felt good to be positive and encouraging to a network that still employs journalists and respects people.
