Turning Obama Red
By Matthew Rothschild, April 18, 2008
The Republican strategy against Barack Obama is becoming clearer by the day. They’re going to red-bait him.
We saw a glimpse of this with the surfacing of the William Ayres Weather Underground connection, which Sean Hannity propelled to the surface, with a kick from George Stephanopoulos. But that’s not all.
William Kristol, in his undeserved column in The New York Times, traced Obama’s “bitter” comment about religion back to Karl Marx. Writing on April 14, Kristol said: “It’s one thing for a German thinker to assert that ‘religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature.’ It’s another thing for an American presidential candidate to claim that we ‘cling to ... religion’ out of economic frustration.”
The very next day on Fox, Karl Rove said Obama’s comment was “almost Marxian.” And Thursday night, Rove and O’Reilly bantered again about Obama’s coziness with the far left.
By Election Day, the Republicans want to make this a contest not against a candidate who is black, but one they claim is red.
