HomeDiariesBreaking BlueE-Wire 2008He Really Doesn't Get It - Does He?
by alegre, Fri Apr 11, 2008 at 11:54:25 PM EST

I'm sure you've heard about this one by now but I've just gotta chime in here guys. From ABC News...

Mayhill Fowler is reporting on the Huffington Post that at a fundraiser in San Francisco this week, Obama put the blue collar voters of small town Pennsylvania on the analyst's couch:

"You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them," Obama said. "And they fell through the Clinton Administration, and the Bush Administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

4. My God - who wouldn't be "bitter" if after 25 yrs the good jobs are still gone?
I'll tell you who wouldn't be bitter - a man and woman cashing in on the Presidency of the past and a man who married a beer tycoon's daughter and hasn't had to pay for food, lodging and other regular folks bills for over thirty years.

What a bunch of shit.

6. he thinks this started 25 years ago?
Has he never heard of the bias against Irish immigrants in the 19th century? Or against the Chinese who built the infrastructure of American West?

And when did Americans start "clinging to guns"?! Certainly not just 25 years ago. That would be the 1980s.

Something is totally muddled up here.

Thinks are remarkable in this country. Everybody is doing well, the economy is strumming along, gas prices are at an all time low, everybody can afford the house of their choice.

Shiny happy people, every one of us.

Yet in the real world he had an 8% favorable rating.

17. Lemme guess the survey sample:
100 people unaware of Jeremiah Wright's existence, until -- after viewing a two-minute FOX "highlights reel" of anything the man's ever said that could be construed as controversial -- they were asked their opinion of Rev. Wright.

I think I'm about ready to give up on this election. What I don't know is whether we're going to lose this time around or whether we're going to win only to lose the next several.

19. I don't know where you live
but I live in a poor rural area where unemployment is 8%, where people damn well do cling to guns and where outsiders are looked upon warily. I live in a place where people age early, and young people with prospects leave and don't come back. And in some ways the people here are lucky because there's still a strong sense of community here, but yeah, bitterness and anger are hardly unheard of, genius.

And those who were previously considering voting for Obama changed their minds as soon as they saw that statement. Gathering in groups where we can all pat each other on the back is comforting, but facing reality is a necessity if you want to win. Reality is that Obama made a mistake that may cost him everything he wants.

hint: personal insults are irrelevant.

Obama: God, guns are only refuge of bitter Pennsylvanians

April 12, 2008

BY ABDON M. PALLASCH

Thirty words White House hopeful Barack Obama said at a private California fund-raiser threatened Friday to torpedo any hopes he had of catching up to Hillary Clinton in the all-important Pennsylvania primary election 10 days from now.

Talking about how the loss of jobs over 25 years has sapped the hope of small-town Pennsylvania residents, Obama said at the Sunday fund-raiser, "they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

...

But he was put on defense in Pennsylvania, after his remarks were posted Friday on the Huffington Post Web site by blogger Mayhill Fowler, who also provided an audiotape of the remarks. Fowler told CNN she was at the closed fund-raiser because she donated $2,300 to Obama's campaign. On Sunday, she had written a shorter column revealing Obama's speculating about possible vice-presidential running-mates but did not say anything about the controversial comments on small-town Pennsylvania residents.

"Frankly, I didn't want to bring down the campaign," Fowler told CNN. "Then I thought about it . . . the remarks bothered me enough that I wanted to write them up."
