1. he ran in 2002 against Tim Johnson the other SD senator
and lost by not much. tim johnson actually had a son who was going to go off to serve in war(he is in iraq right now) so the right wing looked like asses trying to attack him on issues like patriotism and defense. also johnson ran on the fact that a small state such as south dakota gets a huge voice with their guy tom daschle leader in the senate. and the only way he can remain majority leader was if democrats had enough senate seats.

tom daschle got elected first with grassroots campaigning. south dakota is a very republican state but people liked him as a person so they voted for him even with differences on issues. he often goes around the state and meets with people.

2. it's that "stepford politician" look...
...and I don't think it's just repugs that are susceptible. Seems that just about everyone that heads to DC contracts it. Must be in the water...

3. Can we make it go away?
Then, on the opposite end of the spectrum, you have Carl Levin,
who John Stewart recently described as "The senator from Michigan and kindly old shoemaker..."
