we get what we deserve. Do I think he's perfect? Of course not. Do I think he's the perfect candidate at this point in time? You bet.

you keep wanting to make this about me. I could say you sound delusional and brainwashed but I didn't. As I said, I call them like I see them. I know pandering when I hear pandering. It started with his health care plan when he made health care mandatory ONLY for parents. He was pandering to the young who would rather take their chances and do without insurance....of course the rest of us end up paying for them.

He has pandering down to an art form...I will give him credit for that.

The most important thing a President can do is pursuade people. Speech making is VERY important. Hillary has skills, of course. If you think she's better than Obama, that's your choice. But don't underestimate how important speech giving is. Every one of our most celebrated Presidents practically are known for at least one important speech or declaration.

You hit the nail on the head. The presidents job is enforcement of law. He can not create law, or interpret it. However, if he can pursuade the populace that something is important and needs to be done, the people will put the pressure on the lawmakers. He (at least so far) is the most visible person in our government, the one all people can identify. And, as you say, that is where the presidents real power lays.

No, but I understand the historical reasons for this belief, the oppression of African_Americans by many official government institutions, and mistreatment medically.

We killed about 130,000 in Hiroshima from the atom bomb. World Trade Center death toll was about 3,000, so Wright is right on that.

What would you call slavery? Jim Crow? Segregation? Do you think there are no important effects of racism today? Slavery was throughout the American colonies at the time of our founding. Blacks became 3/5 of a person in our constitution, but got no vote whatsoever, of course.

That's a stretch. Our foreign policy has created hatred for us overseas, though, and 9/11 was a form of retaliation for that, like it or not. Were innocent people killed? Absolutely. Are innocents killed abroad? Absolutely.

Do you even know the history of all the events that led to 9/11, or do you just buy into the "They hate us for our freedoms" crap?

The origins of 9/11 go back decades, from our funding the mujahadeen in Afghanistan as a proxy war against the Soviets in the 80's, to the First Gulf War (which we instigated, by the way) where the establishment of a military base in Saudi Arabia was viewed as an insult by many Muslims, including Osama bin Laden. And what about our support of the oppressive Saudi Royal family? They act as our "allies", but meanwhile they are funneling huge amounts of money to anti-American religious groups which are used to distract the Saudi citizens by directing their anger towards the West.

I'm not taking away any responsibility from the planners and executors of the 9/11 attacks, but the US does deserve some of the blame.

Conman)espouses is based in some fact. He though, takes a few facts and goes way over the top. Would it surprise me to someday find out that HIV was designed in a lab at Fort Detrick, MD? A biological weapon that got out of the lab before fully developed and before the vaccine could be made? Not really. Do I think it was designed to attack the black or gay population of the US, no that would shock me. We've already dis-empowered them so what would be the point?

Conman Wright and his antics should be viewed in the light of other more famous Conmen like Falwell, Roberts and the rest. They are all cut from the same cloth and a thinking person would ignore them, the majority of Americans do just that.

It would be interesting to find out when Conman Wright took up his antics as seen in recent videos. What made him act in such a manner? Did he by chance observe the white version of this performed by Conman Falwell and just do a black version?

Though I think he somewhat exaggerates for effect....

the point of Reverend Wright is that although he is critical of our country,and maybe a little off the wall at times, he has had a very successful 30 year record of community programs that try to right some of those wrongs. "Yesterday, December seventh, a date which will live in infamy" - FDR spinning a massive security breach (sneak attack on Pearl Harbor), the deaths of 2,000 Americans, and pandering to Congress to declare war.

"Four score and seven years ago <...> this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."
-- Lincoln spinning the deaths of 40,000 Americans and a tragic ongoing war, and pandering to the half of the nation that had seceded.

"I have a dream." MLK spinning the miserable state of race relations in the 1960's, and pandering to bigots.



I guess, in a way, it is all just pandering and spin. And I'm not saying Obama is in the category of these fine orators (yet). But it is mighty peculiar how the great "panderers" and "spinners" of our history have also been among our greatest leaders.

The fact is, impressive oratory is often (though not always) indicative of a great mind at work, articulating complex ideas with a steady passion, intensity, and conciseness that compels open-minded people to think, and closed-minded people to listen.

My fear for this country and our future is that we're so caught up in the gamesmanship of politics and the complexities of race relations that many won't be able to recognize that.

94. I was very impressed with his speech today
He talked about things I have seen for years and seemed to understand so many different points of view as if he has held them himself. He used language that exposed the rawness of those opinions and spoke with the salve to heal those wounds. As someone who had finally grown weary of trying to change people's minds and finally arrived at the point where I'm just waiting for the unflinching racists of the greatest generation to die off, it was far, far more than I expected to hear and feel in a speech.

Finally, I think I am beginning to believe in this message of change. It's not about policies and laws; it's a way of thinking, an awakening. I truly hope some minds were changed today. Not about any presidential candidates necessarily, but about who we are and how we relate to each other. If we are to remain a nation of people who mindlessly resent one another, who allow entertainment and so-called news media to pit us against each other (instead of us united against those who would exploit us), does it really matter who the president is?

i was angry, deeply saddened when kucinich was ignored, and then dropped out. and if it tells you anything about me, edwards was too conservative for me. i was almost reluctant to support him as well. but i did...

and then when edwards was forced out as well, i said i wasn't gonna vote. i said all we had left were two corporate candidates, and a vote for either of them was a vote for a republican, and that whether or not they won, the republican agenda would still be in play. gradually, obama won my support, but it was more in rejection of clinton.

as this race wore on, my rejection of clinton grew, and my support of obama reflected that more than respect and admiration of obama. i refused to buy into the "hype," i refused to become a "cultish" supporter (though i have never thought his supporters were cultish to begin with). i wasn't going to be romantic about it at all. my support was merely in protest.

my support wavered and played disappearing acts. it fluctuated. sometimes, i was moved by obama, to the point i thought i liked him enough to be a proud supporter. i even changed my signature to "gobama..." briefly. but completely disillusioned and skeptical of the government and the election process, when i read conspiracy theories about him, the sort of "skull and bones/mason" theories and so on, i was more convinced of them than i was of his authenticity.

i have been so doom and gloom, depressed, skeptical and even frightened for the future and for my children's futures. i'm still skeptical, but i think without that, without a resistance to trust, without critical thought, without insight and a touch of cynicism, we open the doors to eras like the one we've recently seen and worse, to blind allegiance and nationalism and fascism and so on. but i have to say, trying to avoid invoking corny campaign slogans or catchy phrases, i'm kinda sorta maybe a little...feeling hopeful...and looking forward to...change.

this past week, and yesterday, and this morning, i have felt a certain consistency. i now see obama as more than just a strong orator, more than just a motivating figurehead propped up, one of a handful of evils to choose from. he stirs patriotic pride deep within me that has been so suppressed by anger and frustration and distrust. he may not be that liberal i wanted, but i am finally convinced beyond "he'll do." for the first time, i see the possibility the first great president in my lifetime.

and I don't now, either. He gives a good speech. We knew that already. :shrug:

132. This country of voters has been collossally stupid before-
unfortunately, I have no reason to think it will stop now. We did elect Gore but by the slimmest of margins That should have been such a landslide it could not be stolen.
Then dumbfuckistan went and elected Bush.
I have little faith that we are smart enough to elect Obama. Or even Clinton.
President McCain, I'm just about ready to bet on it.

136. Our election results have become truly perverse.
Al Gore wins in 2000 and dumbf*ck bush becomes president. Republicans vote for Hillary in 2008 because they hate her. McCain leads in the polls by promising a third term of bush, whom 70% of the voters have soundly rejected.

If America were a person, it would have long ago been institutionalized to prevent it from harming itself or others. Our behavior in the world is that of a psychotic bully. To the rest of the world, our once-proud nation now wears the hideous, snarling face of dick cheney, a certifiable sociopath and criminal.

This is the lowest point ever for America. If we can somehow recover from the bush Catastrophe, we can recover from anything!
