Poll question: Hypothetical: Third Party candidate. Please read before voting.
This is only hypothetical and also highly unlikely. This is meant to test what is more important to people, getting Bush out of office or putting a Democrat in office, so here goes the hypothetical question:

It's October 1, 2004. A Third Party candidate running on a progressive platform that is anti-IWR takes on steam and is currently polling at ~38-42%. Looking at the electoral map, s/he stands the best chance of defeating Bush by probably taking more than 50% of the electoral college. Bush is also polling at ~38-42%, but doesn't look like he can break the 50% margin on electoral votes although it's "too close to call". The Electoral college is once again a virtual tie. Kerry is in extremely poor shape, looking to only take Massachusetts as a state and losing everywhere else.

How do you vote?

1. I cannot imagine this could ever happen, but I want Bush out...
before he has the freedom of a lame duck term to hurt us even worse.

I like Kerry. I think he will make a fine president.

2. That's why I used the words "highly unlikely"
Edited on Wed Mar-24-04 12:46 PM by Walt Starr
It stands about as much chance of actually happening as Bush coming out and admitting he's a two-faced liar.

It's a test of principals. What's more important, a progressive defeating Bush or voting for Kerry? It looks like Kerry do or die is polling much higher than I expected, especially since many of us who despise Kerry are still going to vote for him because we actually stand behind the principal of throwing the chimp* out.

3. If the 3rd Party stood a chance of winning, I would vote 3rd Party
in a heartbeat. The important thing would be to get Bush out.

This didn't work out so well in 2000 when the same was true in the reverse and the 3rd Party had the chance to send Bush Packing.

6. I don't have a problem with that
Bush is a disaster. He's got to go.

I don't care how, but he's got to be fired and sent packing.

8. I'm still shocked to see how many people would still go for Kerry
Seriously, I thought this election was allabout electability and under the hypothetical situation, there is no way Kerry would win.

9. Using your reasoning..
are you shocked about the many people who will still vote for third parties despite the fact that these parties don't have the slightest chance?

(btw I did not participate in that poll)

14. If the third party is Nader, then no.
I don't agree with him on a lot of things and he would be a terrible president. Besides this would never happen anyway.

17. So, what the question really boils down to is..
Third party candidate v. Bush..Kerry would pretty much be the spoiler.

Kerry/Nader role reversal.

18. Who is this progressive third party candidate?
Does that ticket really have the best shot of winning, and where do they stand on issues other than the Iraqi war?

20. All unimportant questions in th hypothetical
The hypothesis is that Kerry has no chance of winning and a third party candidate stands a damn good chance of defeating Bush. The hypothesis tests the will of those who claim to be ABB to actually demonstrate ABB tendencies.

ABB means voting for whomsoever stands the absolute best shot of defeating Bush. Voting for Kerry in this hypothetical situation is anti-ABB.
