Hillary Clinton and the Restorative Powers of a Raucous South Texas crowd

HIDALGO, Texas, Feb 20 (Reuters) - {snipped} - "We don't need on-the-job training for the next president of the United States," Clinton said in courting Hispanics at a rousing rally in this south Texas town on the Mexican border.

The New York senator and former first lady sharpened her message against Obama before the March 4 Democratic nominating contests in Texas and Ohio, which have become critical to her presidential aspirations following her losses on Tuesday to Obama in Wisconsin and Hawaii.

"It's about picking a president who relies not just on words but on work, on hard work," she said. "We need to make a choice between speeches and solutions, because while words matter greatly, the greatest words in the world are not enough unless you match them with action."

In Hidalgo, Clinton also took aim at President George W. Bush, the Texan who has 11 months left in office. "Don't you think the entire world will let out a sigh of relief" when he leaves office? she asked. The crowd cheered.

Clinton also seemed to take a shot at Obama's wife, Michelle Obama, after Mrs. Obama raised eyebrows by saying this week in Wisconsin she felt pride in the United States for the first time in her adult life because it felt like hope was returning to the nation.

"This country has given me so many opportunities," Clinton said. "I am proud of the United States of America."

I work in the same building as one of the principal early voting sites in my city, so I voted early yesterday. There were lines out the door, lots of Hillary buttons (no Obama insignia to be seen) and, even barely past breakfast, a mob of sign-waving supporters for various candidates on every corner of the block. Again, lots of Hillary signs, usually in tandem with a local pol's, but no Obama. Our Congresscritter has been actively campaigning for her, as have our State Rep and Senator, all but one County Commissioner, the County Judge, and assorted other local officeholders past and present.

I got an email invitation from Bill who is hosting a debate party at a local pub in San Antonio tomorrow night, but it's too far for me to travel, even though it's only a half hour. I feel too vulnerable; I still have a limp that I'm trying to get rid of from an injury.

All this excitement going on in my town.

there's at least 1 million people in the lower RGV area. 200K+ in the McAllen area alone. 200-300 isn't a great turn out in an arena that probably holds 5000. There were thousands at Bill Clinton's rally the night before the 1992 election at his campaign stop in McAllen, so much so they had to bus people in from the mall parking lot to the airport. And there was less than a 24-hour lead time on that rally as it was added at the last minute & not on the original agenda.

She's putting all her eggs in the baskets of the South Texas party bosses, who are doing their best to stomp out the grassroots here (and I'm speaking from personal experience). She might pull it off down here, but not in the ass-kicking numbers she needs.
