and the winner gets to choose when they want to give their speech. They owe nothing to a challenger who doesn't acknowledge their loss...or even acknowledge their own supporters.

92. I agree. "To the winner goes the spoils" is definitely not a justification...
... but stepping on a concession speech lacking concession or congratulations, if I've heard correctly, would seem perfectly reasonable.

My history tells me that the victor gives a victory speech, and the loser(s) give concession speeches. That's the way it has worked. The networks don't have an obligation to carry any of the speeches, but I expect that they're operating under this old premise.

As for the Obama campaign starting early, I doubt that they felt they needed to sit back, following their victory, and listen to their candidate be denigrated. If the Clinton camp opted to breach traditional conduct, the Obama campaign can't really be faulted for responding.

96. Did you see the Clinton press release
saying her speech would be at 8:30
Tuesday, February 19, 2008 6:26 PM

From NBC's Mark Murray
The Clinton campaign has released excerpts of the speech Hillary Clinton will give tonight at 8:30 pm ET from Youngstown, OH. And, according to these excerpts, she doesn't mince words when talking about Obama.

He then announced he'd start at 9:30.
He had 20,000 people waiting.
She started late.
He started on time.

Here are some of the excerpts
I realize she's campaigning but had he not started on time this would be what we heard from her just before his speech started
Both Senator Obama and I would make history. But only one of us is ready on day one to be commander in chief, ready to manage our economy, and ready to defeat the Republicans. Only one of us has spent 35 years being a doer, a fighter and a champion for those who need a voice. That is what I would bring to the White House. That is the choice in this election.

It’s about picking a president who relies not just on words – but on work, hard work, to get America back to work. Someone who’s not just in the speeches business – but will get America back in the solutions business…

44. Do you understand the meaning of that phrase, Magic Rat?
Because I don't think you do.

"During a Congressional debate in 1831 a New York senator, William L. Marcy, used the phrase "to the victor belong the spoils." This saying accurately described the spoils system of appointing government workers. Each time a new administration came into power thousands of public servants were discharged and members of the victorious political party took over their jobs."

"In the politics of the United States, a spoils system refers to an informal practice by which a political party, after winning an election, gives government jobs to its voters as a reward for working toward victory, and as an incentive to keep working for the party—as opposed to a system of awarding offices on the basis of some measure of merit independent of political activity (merit system)."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spoils_system

The bush administration is run on the spoils system. Party loyalty over merit.

states that it's hard to see how she could win in November. She rarely acknowledges states in which she's lost, and Hillary and her campaign have made it clear that she regards dozens of states insignificant.

Or are they just impatient to gloat?

I would think there should be less gloating, lest you jinx yourself. There was a tremendous amount of gloating in 2000 and 2004, especially the night of the election. Maybe I'm just superstitious, but the laws of karma really frown on gloating.

The Obama camp graciously said, "You first", but when Clinton didn't concede and proceeded to stump....they knocked her off the air. Very smart.

The Clinton's will have a hard time making political hay out of this, since they look so ungracious with failing to concede (multiple times).

If primary turnout is any indication. I just hate seeing threads like this. Nothing more than gloating assholes vs sore losers. Nothing good comes of it.

91. A concession speech is short, to the point and over
Apparently when she gave her regular speech and made no mention of a concession, they decided to cut out to the acceptance speech.

With 20K people waiting patiently, I guess they waited as long as they could:)

93. Trying to control your opponent's message...
By trying to *over-run* their schedule. Real nice tactic, that.

Let me guess who the "victim" is.... I think I might be able to figure it out...
