Obama stuns Missouri, more than doubles votes of Republican front-runner
Obama’s margin of victory in St. Louis City and St. Louis County were even larger. In St. Louis City, Obama won 47,675 votes (71.07 percent) to Clinton’s 18,291 votes (27.27 percent). In St. Louis County, Obama won 117,108 votes (62.55 percent) to Clinton’s 66,886 votes (35.72 percent).

These numbers are remarkable for several reasons. As U.S. Rep. Russ Carnahan, another early Obama supporter, pointed out Tuesday, Missouri is “a bell-weather state” with an uncanny record of predicting who will win the presidency.

Obama’s 405,470 votes in Missouri on Tuesday more than doubled the number of votes received by the winner of the Republican Primary in Missouri, John McCain, who got 194,119 votes...

Obama’s victory in Missouri also was important because it was won by an electorate energized at record levels. According to Robin Carnahan, the 2008 primary set records for turnout, surpassing 2004 totals by approximately 870,000 votes and 2000 totals by nearly 670,000 votes. Overall, more than 1.4 million Missouri voters cast ballots on Tuesday. “He is expanding the base of his party,” Clay said of Obama.

1. This is kind of surreal... the state was essentially a tie, so it seems Hillary also doubled McCain

27. No, St Louis, the city was blue
always has been. That a Dem gets a lot of votes there in the presidential primary is not a surprise.

10. Link?
Especially considering how close the Republicans were in Missouri, that really doesn't make any sense.

14. Sorry, but Missourians are too ornery to do that kind of shit.
If the RNC told them how to vote, they'd vote the opposite just to show their independence.

I promise. It's not the 'Show Me' state for nothing.

20. bwahahaha
bzzzt. sorry, most folks repuke or dem don't take marching orders and vote like little programmed bots for whom the party tells them to. Just as Reagan attracted huge numbers of disaffected dems, so is Obama attracting indies and dems turned off by repuke control. I know it's hard for you to realize that this is happening, but that's the way it is.

You have zip evidence and you have the gall to accuse others of being duped? You're desperate. And it's going to be ugly to see how desperate your lot gets in the coming days.

28. This is what I suspect, too
The GOP is sending its voters into caucuses and open primaries to vote for Obama because he will be easier to defeat.

Proof? Look at all the right wing talking heads and news outlets who are talking up Obama. Something is rotten here. Dems are being set up.

I think Obama knows this is true, but can't bring himself to admit he won't be able to hold onto these voters in the GE.

30. Republicans were insignificant in the Missouri vote
Clinton took the Democratic vote by 3%, 50%-47%; and Obama won Independents by 37%, 67%-30%. Together 95% of the total vote.

http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/primaries/results/epolls/index.html#MODEM

Every election there is this story of massive numbers of Republicans crossing over in Democratic primaries for the purpose you state and it is rarely borne out. In this election there is even less reason to accept this conspiracy theory since we have all known to expect Republicans to be abandoning their party for ours. I only wish there were more of them showing up for Democrats.

29. StL and KC are the Dem strongholds
There's no way Obama can win the entire state in the GE based on that support alone. Even Claire McCaskill knows that.

So how will Obama win the rest of Missouri?
