Ed Schultz said that no one will be able to touch Obama because it will look like racism
and no one is going to go there.

He said this when talking about strategy McCain will be able to use and not use in the GE.

I was flabbergasted!

19. To be fair, Schultz said President Clinton lied about Senator Obama's...
...stance on the Iraq war. Schultz has consistently said that he thought the charges of racism that were leveled at President Clinton were unfair and grossly overblown by the media.

It gives him a certain untouchability that Hillary is not blessed with. She seems to be fair game. (And before anybody jumps all over me, I'm fence-sitting, not supporting Hillary.)

I was quite disappointed in David Shuster for that comment, which thankfully I didn't personally hear. Poor Chelsea has really taken a lot of abuse from certain corners over the years, and for no good reason that I can see.

2. There is some truth to that - the backlash associated with the slightest misuse of language
Could cost McCain the election in a heartbeat.

I have thought this myself, so it's not just Shultz that has this feeling.

Look at what trouble Bill got into for even implying that MLK wasn't solely responsible for the Civil Rights Amendment.

3. It will be hard to do so overtly
but I'm sure that covertly there will be a lot of propaganda using the race card--and also the religion one as well. Many Americans equate Islam with brown skinned peoples, and the "Obama is a Muslim" email is one that not only feeds on Islamic prejudice but color prejudice as well.

And don't care.

They will work under the radar and rather subtly to insinuate race into the campaign, I would bet my next 6 paycheck on it.

24. That's my take on it.
It's pretty naive to think that the GOP won't play the race card. Look at what they did to Harold Ford in his run for Senate in TN. The 527s will do the dirty work. McCain feign outrage for 30 seconds but not much longer.

He could speak out against the Swiftboaters against Kerry because it was easy. He wasn't the candidate.

11. He's right...
McCain and the GOP would have a tough time "swift-boating" Obama because the backlash they would face.

They would be impotent, and forced to go after Obama on the issues.

...and we all know what happens to Republicans in campaigns that are about the issues.... BLOW OUT.

Rovian strategies won't work against Obama.... as Bill and Hillary are finding out.

So.... another data point showing that Obama is our best bet in the GE.

Young people who are voting for the first time are turning out in droves to vote and they aren't going to vote for Grandpa McCain for obvious reasons. Look at what happened in Idaho and Utah. It was a miracle. Mostly, the new voters seem to be color blind too.

16. Are you kidding? What sheer idiocy.
In that way of thinking, no one can criticize Hillary because she's a woman and that would be sexist, or Bloomberg because that would be anti-semetic, or Sen. Shumer because that would be so anti-New York, or Bill Richardson because that would be anti-Hispanic.

If he gets the nomination, Barack will be torn limb to limb like the Repubs do to every Dem candidate and he will have to deal with it, like all white folks before him. And I think he'll do just fine.

17. As a matter of image that is true.
Republicans don't want to take the broad image hit for the anti-Obama campaign they would certainly run.

As a matter of practical vote-getting, however, the Republicans will get as racist as they feel necessary.

Presidential general election voters do not vote out of pity, and in a zero-sum game suppressing votes is almost as useful as winning votes. The pugs can easily create situations where people don't want to vote for the Racist Republican or the "Muslim drug-dealing" Democrat.

I don't know where they will draw the line but I am guessing it would depend on polling... they will do the bare minimum racist bullshit as they can get away with.

26. The first thing each candidate, if they are the nominee, will be handed like a steaming pile
will be:

If it is Hillary - "Do we really want Bill Clinton "or the Clinton's) back in the White House? Or 7 long months of Monica, cigar gate and Ken Starr running his mouth. (NOT my meme, but certainly enough to get the Repubs base worked into a damn frenzy). PAC's probably already have the first commercial made.

If it is Obama - "Do we want an admitted drug addict running this country?" (NOT my meme...and never mind that we have had a REAL drug addict running this country, or that this meme will most likely come out of the MOUTH of a REAL drug addict)...it is one of the first pieces of poo that will be thrown by the PAC's. PAC's probably already have the first commercial made.

No need to attack on bigoted subjects like race or gender......that will be for the real asshats to deliver at the ballot box on 11/4/08...and unfortunately, there are plenty of bigoted asshats, public and secret, in this country to make a difference. Unless, the Repubs are so stupid...well..that certainly could happen.

Turnout will be the key for whomever the candidate is.

If the media wants him coronated, he'll be fine. He's smart and tough enough to handle McCain.
If they don't, there are boatloads of things they can hit him with that won't be remotely racist.

Immigration control= racism

MLK comments = racism

Getting black and lation gang members off the street = racusn

Bill Clitnon = racism

If you don't like Obama = racist

White person complains about being called a racist because they vote for Clinton ( a white woman ) = he or she must be racist

I don't know what is worse, actual racists or those that are quick to say that they are not racist because they like Obama. OR Those that say Mr. Schultz is a racist for saying that.
