Post-Bulletin, Rochester MN

First District Congressman Tim Walz says he will support Sen. Barack Obama's presidential bid.

Walz, a first-term DFLer from Mankato, announced his position this afternoon following the results of Tuesday night's precinct caucuses in which Obama took 67 percent of the votes in Minnesota.

In Olmsted County, Obama took 3,054 votes compared with Sen. Hillary Clinton's 1,540 votes.

Obama won 3,283 votes and Clinton won 2,010 votes in Dodge, Fillmore, Goodhue, Houston, Mower, Wabasha and Winona counties.

Walz' political director Richard Carlbom said "In a sense, he's just taking the advice of the people in the district."

About a year and a half ago Obama came to the Mayo Civic Center to rally support for Walz and now-U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, two DFLers who ended up winning that year -- Walz upending 12-year Congressman Gil Gutknecht and Klobuchar beating out then Congressman Mark Kennedy.

"Last night at the Democratic caucuses, the voters of southern Minnesota overwhelmingly supported Senator Barack Obama and his hopeful vision for positive change," Walz said in a release from his campaign office. "As a superdelegate to the Democratic National Convention, I will honor their decision and support Senator Obama
