Richardson is out

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson said on Sunday he was not interested in being tapped as the Democratic vice presidential candidate.

Appearing on the CBS "Face the Nation" program, Richardson said, "I love being governor of New Mexico. We've made a lot of progress. My job isn't finished yet. I've only been governor a year.

"You know, governor is the best job in the world and I've said this before, nobody seems to believe me.... But I am very happy in my job," said Richardson, a Hispanic with a long resume as a congressman, Clinton cabinet member and United Nations (news - web sites) ambassador.

1. I like Richardson, but I think this is good news....
I just don't think he would add anything "dynamic" to the ticket. I'm really worried about Kerry going with a safe, older guy with reserved style, which I think Richardson is.

3. I think it'll definitely have to be somebody from the traditional "south"
Despite Bush's pandering, I think the Democrats have enough of a bonafide history of support for Hispanics and their concerns, well before the Republicans decided they were a political force to kiss-ass to. Richardson never seemed enthused about the prospect of Pres or VP, or any nomination. To me, it would seem like a blatant CYA/counter-move, in response to the Bush/Rove/RNC's most obvious pandering to what they would only consider, a "voting bloc," rather than a constituency.

Kerry is going to have to fight for the south, even against a Connecticut-born "Rancher," whom purchased his ranch when he decided to run for Pres, Bush's spiel is selling among many of the friend's and family I have down in the "dirty south." Certainly wouldn't hurt to have somebody they could relate to.

4. The more I look around
at the candidates. It seems to always point me back to either Sam Nunn or Edwards. I don't think Graham will be it and I certainly don't believe Nelson has the name recognition.

6. thats too bad
Richardson was perfect. The way I see it, the republican base comes from the south, and for the next coupla decades, the south will be solidly republican. But we dems are on the verge of taking the southwest. We already have the west coast, the northeast, and bits of the midwest. That's all we need!!!

Thats why we need a southwestern VP.

7. This makes sense...
I don't think it's quite right to leave in just one year. They elected him to do a four year job. I think he's a very likely contendor in a future election though.

8. He's said he's out all along
I think he did an interview with Wolfie or Judy a few weeks ago where he made that pretty clear. He has a state to govern and he intends to do that.
