Betraying Dennis, funding Kerry, no more primary $
Hello everyone!

Well, I'll hop on the bandwagon of Kerry being the nominee now, so here's my dillema.

I can't afford to give huge contributions to anyone, and I certainly can't afford to give contributions to more than one candidate. I've contributed to Kucinich's campaign for the primary, but now that Kerry's pretty much got it locked up (and I think it's impossible - is it not, for Kucinich to catch up at this point), I'm ready to switch.

HOWEVER, I don't want to contribute any $ to Kerry's primary campaign. I'm looking at maybe $500 total contribution for the election split into several donations. I'd like Kerry to start to look strong as being able to at least challenge Bush in money gathering.

So, when should I start giving and why?

david

1. no reason to give kerry money for primary
also, you might have to help dennis kucinich in his congressional race. i'm not sure if kucinich's is a safe seat or not. if it is, then no need to worry, if not, then contribute to him for that. you also don't have to contribute all the money at one time. you can give some now, a bit later, etc.

2. Give to Kerry campaign between now and late-July 2004.
After John Kerry accepts the Democratic Nomination in late July, his campaign will be based on $74 million in federal funds.

They will be limited in accepting donations after that point.

So please give between now and early-July.

3. Money you give to Kerry now will be spent on fighting Bush, not DK

But you could just wait till after the convention to donate, if you want.

4. Fund Issue Advocacy
Perhaps your money would be best spent by helping to fund issues which are important to you. If you're a liberal, and I assume you are, you will assist and cajole Kerry at the same time by advancing causes you believe in.

5. I'd urge you to go on contributing to DK for 2 reasons:
1) he's the one pushing the issues (Kerry has already been pushed into at least paying lip-service to DK's 'UN in, US out' strategy).

2) DK might still win, if we get enough people to support him as the pragmatic leftist choice.

6. Is it really possible?
Are there enough delegates left up for grabs that Dennis could actually win the nomination.

I agree about the issues, though, of course.

Will do some thinking...

7. Yes, it really is! (I know the propaganda says it isn't)
But Kerry has only 1/3 of all delegates committed to him. TWO-THIRDS are still available. He still needs to get another 1/6 simply to scrape the barest majority.

It's only the relentless propaganda drumbeat that makes it seem as though he already has it locked up. In reality he's very far from it!

9. You are mistaken
Kucinich needs greater than 100% of all the remaining delegates to get the nomination.

10. Uhhhh, that's not true
It's well above half now. Also, Kerry has over 1500 and DK and Sharpton have less than 50. The only way DK could win is if no one voted for Kerry, Edwards, Dean, Clark, LaRouche, or Lieberman ever again for the rest of the primaries. Then he might have a chance, maybe.

11. Not even then
Kucinich has 18. He'd need 2162 for the nomination. That means he needs to get 2144 more delegates. There are 1977 still to go.

He cannot win. In fact, I predict he won't get a single additional delegate.

15. 18????
18 people at the convention? That's it? I'm sure they'll have huge pull.

16. "Well above half" of what? If he needs 2161, that must mean
there are 4320 toto. Fifteen hundred doesn't come close to being half of that. Whence my point: there is still room for someone else to take the nomination. Kerry has just over 1/3, so approximately 2/3 are still up for grabs.

18. No...

Kerry has well above half of what he needs to secure the nomination.

He has 1,557 delegates. He needs 2,162 to secure the nomination. So he has 72% of what he needs. He needs 605 more delegates.

Dennis Kucinich has 18 delegates. Therefore, he needs 2,144 delegates to secure the nomination.

However, there are only 1,971 delegates left to be won. DK would need 108% of the remaining delegates - a mathematical impossibility.

Neither Dennis Kucinich nor Al Sharpton can win enough delegates to be the nominee.

20. That's an outright fabrication. Kerry has 72% of needed delegates
and only needs 605 more to lock it up.

22. I hate to break it to you, but 72 (if that's what he has) is just over 66
Edited on Fri Mar-05-04 05:05 PM by Mairead
And that's of half, not of the whole. If he has 72% of half, then he has only 36% of the whole -- slightly over 1/3, which is what I said.

24. My point was that
there WAS confusion about what was intended by the other poster. I agree with you that he has 36% of total number of delegates. He needs 50%+1 to win.

None of which has any bearing on the important point - that Dennis Kucinich and Al Sharpton are mathematically eliminated from the race.

I have listed the numbers above that explain why. Two thirds of the delegates are NOT still available. Less than half are.

25. What the hell is your point??? He has 72% of the TOTAL he needs
to WIN. The point is he is still in a better position that what you tried to mischaracterize.

And what you said about the others having any chance to win the nomination still is an outright lie.

Edited on Sat Mar-06-04 07:30 AM by Mairead
72% of half+1 leaves 128%-1 of half yet to be allocated. 128% is bigger than 72%. It's simple arithmetic!

19. Oh that is just bullshit!
I don't have anything against Kucinich, but he doesn't have any chance of winning the nomination. Not even if he won every single delegate in every one of the 20 states left to have a primary.

Someone is pissing on your leg and telling you it's raining.:eyes:

27. Do your sums again
To scrape the nomination, Kerry needs half of all delegates plus one delegate. He has 72% (you say) of that. That means he has LESS THAN HALF THE TOTAL NUMBER.

Why is that so hard for you? What are you not seeing?

8. The general election is a separate cycle
Start giving to Kerry when he gets the winning number of delegates--not until.

12. If it were MY money,
I would give what I can to Dennis right now TODAY, so that he could double it with matching funds.(Make a little be more.)Today is the LAST DAY for candidates to get matching funds and Kerry has opted out.

Then take stock of your budget and decide what to do next. You might want to contribute to MoveOn to help the whole Democratic Party, or contribute more to DK, or wait until after the convention to contribute to Kerry.

But, it's NOT my money.

13. There are 20 state primaries left, I'm still donating to Dennis.
Why? Because I'd like to see him pick up more delegates.

I know that Kerry will undoubtedly be the nominee at the July convention, but until ALL the primaries are over, I think it's extremely worthwhile to contribute to keeping Dennis' message getting out to the voters.

14. If Kucinich
DOUBLES his current delegate count, he still has less than 1% of the delegates. Hardly a strong negotiating position.

To the original poster. Split in half if you have a conflict of interest. Hard as it may sound to believe, I like both of these men a lot. DK was my first choice but Kerry always was number 2. Do what you feel best.

23. I've been thining about this stuff a lot myself...
If I come into any money I can spare, I'm giving it to MoveOn. It's not just the president that needs to be removed, the GOP needs to be hammered at, too, so as to weaken the attacks they'll set on Kerry if he wins. MoveOn seems to be doing a fine job. You could also give to Congressional Dems in weak seats. We need those, badly.
