US presidential hopeful Barack Obama has told a French magazine he wants to organise a summit of the Muslim world if he makes it to the White House.

Muslim and Western leaders would be invited to the summit for "a discussion about how we can prevent the widening misunderstandings and gaps between the Muslim world and the West," Obama said in the interview to Paris Match.

Is this a good idea? Heck, yeah, it is! Engaging the Muslim world in real dialogue is something we should've done a long time ago. It defeats the jihadist talking points that convince young Muslims that America wants to destroy Islam, and it shows the rest of the world that we can do more than just drop bombs and fire guns at people.

But, in our democracy today, can someone named Obama campaign to a win on a policy of Muslim dialogue?

I'm not going to even answer that question. Every single person reading this knows exactly how the Right Wing talk radio and e-mail slime brigades will spin this, and how the cable media will pick up on it.

We're a nation dominated by cowards and rednecks, racists and assholes, selfish individualists and smug idiots.

Maybe I'm having a bad day today, but I can't see anyone who openly supports smart policies of peace and dialogue getting elected anymore. And it depresses the goddamn hell out of me.
