Is the Hillary Florida victory impressive?
I would say it is IF all the candidates had campagined as hard as they had in other states. But the fact that it was not competed in and Clinton has always led the polls makes it less than impressive. In the end she won by about 17 points 50-33 percent. Exit polls show that people who made up their minds in the last month voted increasingly for Obama.

Now take a state like South Carolina where in December Hillary had a lead and all the candidates competed in (including a prominent ex-president who shall be nameless) and in the end Obama won by 55-27 percent--to me that is a truly awesome victory because they all worked the state. Or even New Hampshire where Hillary came in after a stunning loss in Iowa and came back to win by 2-points that's even more significant than Florida because they all competed.

Basically the media is even downplaying Florida because it was a straw-poll and no delegates were allocated. The big story to them is McCain's win and probably sealing the nomination.

Super Tuesday has real live delegates up for stake and may the best people win.

1. nah
I've been keeping an eye on the morning shows, they're far more interested in this McCain win/Giuliani drop out. Hillary only got a few mentions but they also made sure to say it was merely a "beauty contest" and a wash. The NYTimes who endorsed her didn't even put her pic on the front page. I don't think it was the mo they were hoping for.

2. I think it was fair enough (and Clinton is not my first choice)
Starting on Super Tuesday, there are a lot of states the candidates won't be campaigning in. Hillary showed her strength in this state, which trends older.

The thing that was untoward about it was the fact that it bucked Democratic rules by going early. Its delegates therefore won't be counted on any first vote at the convention. Florida should have taken its turn and obeyed the party rules.

But I think Hillary "won" it fair and square.

3. There's no way to measure the importance...
...since there wasn't the usual campaigning ~ only shows that Hillary is well-known and well-liked there.

6. For the uninitiated: this is the Obamites' way of saying "Congratulations, Hillary."
Edited on Wed Jan-30-08 07:48 AM by Perry Logan
"Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., swept virtually every significant voting group to easily win the Florida Democratic primary.
Clinton handily beat Obama by 26 points among women, the bedrock of Clinton's support, and edged him by 7 points
among men. Turnout among women increased to 59 percent from 55 percent in 2004. Clinton won big among liberals and
moderates, beating Obama and Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., handily among independents, a group that Obama had won in
every other Democratic contest in which he competed this year. Clinton, again, won among seniors, a continually reliable
group for her by a gaping 59 to 23 percent.
Clinton beat Obama among independent voters, a group key to his early success, winning 42-28 percent. Obama has
consistently appealed to high end voters -- those with higher incomes and higher education -- but, again, Clinton beats
Obama across the board. Among those with income of $100,000 or more Clinton wins by 19 points. Among college
graduates she wins by a more modest 7 points.
Among Democratic voters, 55 percent said the economy was the most important issue facing the country, followed by a
quarter who cited the war in Iraq and 18 percent who said health care. Clinton wins across each group, with sizable
advantages among "economy" voters (20-point edge over Obama, 50-30 percent) and health care voters (21 points over
Obama, 52-31 percent)."

In the 2004 Presidential Preference Primary, Floridians voted for Kerry to the number of 581,672

In the 2008 Presidential Preference Primary, Floridians voted for Hillary to the number of 854,090

I wonder why the Hillary haters are out in force attempting to marginalize this astounding victory, and attempting to nullify the vote of so many Floridians?
