"Don't call me a homophobe, when I love everybody...
Don't tell me that I stand up and I say vile words against the gay community because I don't. I don't speak against the homosexual. I tell you that God delivered me from homosexuality."

Donnie McClurkin at an Obama campaign event

1. God delivered me from that vile existance...
Same deal. Why would you say "God delivered" you unless there was something wrong in your mind... there's no need for God's deliverance. God created homosexuals. God loves homosexuals. We are all his children and he loves us all equally. If you believe in the bearded cloud deity, then you must believe this. If you don't, you aren't a Christian. Christ would never hold a heterosexual above a homosexual.

14. Beautifully put
Just what you said is what needs to be the sermon instead of fanning the flames of homophobia in those black churches, a tactic employed to great success by Republican party as well, with millions in faith-based funds going to corrupt black pastors who take the money and preach the homophobic message their white masters tell them to.

20. Thank you, downstairsparts...
How sad that these black pastors don't understand they are still enslaved to white masters because of this! For the life of me I cannot understand why any self respecting person of color would listen to a Republican for guidance! Or worse still, be a Republican themselves! I just don't get it.

Faith-based money to the churches. They're sellouts. That's why.

24. Step away from the retoric-
for a sec.

You describe the "god" I believe exists Juniperx- when you say there is no need for deliverance. When you claim that God's love is without strings, or based on us.

Sadly, not everyone percieves "god" in this way. If you embrace a "god" similar to the one Mclurkin does, then you'd probably understand his desperation. If you don't, then what does his "god" matter to YOU?-

Those who do not believe in any "god"- shouldn't see Donnie Mclurkin's struggle as having any real bearing on them-

Mclurken believes that he was in need of 'fixing'- and that he is 'fixed'. I think that is very sad- especially for him, but I cannot force him to see things differently- any more than he can force anyone to see things through his paradigm (angry, judgemental god).

I honestly don't think he intends to be offensive to others. I think he is desperate for acceptance, so desperate that he will do and say things, live a life that may not be authentic, in order to feel that he is now "ok". What a poor exchange on his part.

I can't tell anyone how they should feel about Mclurkin. We all feel what we do- I can understand that his life and his words are very troubling to many people.

I wish I had an answer, a solution- But I don't.

Human Beings are complicated things. The 'god' I believe in, doesn't require anything from 'us'. And will never reject us. We humans are the ones who respond that way, and who demand that others conform. If my 'god' was like that, I'd have a difficult time believing that "he" is nothing more than an extention of "mankind".

peace~

25. Hi bluerthanblue...
Edited on Fri Jan-18-08 03:36 PM by Juniperx
I was raised in a Fundamentalist Christian church. I saw the hypocrisy, and I left. His God matters to me because he is touting himself as a Christian. A Christian, by definition, is someone who tries his human best to live according to the teachings of Christ. I don't believe McLurkin is doing that, and therefore is using Christ's name in vain.

I'm very live and let live, but when those who profess to be Christians don't walk the talk, it's unfair to those they are Bible bashing. In such cases, I root for the underdog:)

Otherwise, I agree with you completely. Man was created in God's image... it should NOT be the other way around.

for your kind and patient reply Juniperx-

I'm an ex-fundie myself, and believe I understand what you are saying about "Christ"ian hyprocricy. Unfortunately, from what I've experienced, there are many "mainstream" 'followers' who continue to ignore the life and teachings of Christ- or, tend to use Jesus when he fits, and revert to more judgemental, rigid and destructive dogma to reinforce personal prejudices, or control others when needed.

It was clear to me that if indeed "god" was who some humans eagerly portrayed 'him' to be- then, there was no use trying to 'become' "acceptable"- because I wasn't gonna fool anyone- least of all "god" or myself, and I'd sooner be damned to "eternal hell" than play along rather than face rejection.

I can get behind the call to denounce the homophobic dogma but I can't despise the man, because I believe Donnie Mclurken is stuck in a situation that I'd never wish on anyone. He may believe he is at peace- but if he truly was, I don't think he'd have to keep trying to convince everyone of that-

I really appreciate your taking the time to reply-

peace~

We are on the same hymnal page here. You are a far better person than I... and I'm honored and blessed by conversation with you.

I'm a straight female, but I was born and raised in Long Beach, CA... a very, very progressive city in SoCal, and a haven for gays. As such, I was raised with, have worked for, have been friends with (as horrid as it sounds to say "some of my best friends are gay") and have loved many a gay person. I'm very protective of all people I hold dear:)

And what would have happened if she had? Would gay people have been told by party apparatchiks told to suck it up because what were going to do otherwise, vote for the Republicans?

32. When ever someone starts by "don't call me a homophobe, or don't call me a racist or don't call me a
xenophobe, it almost always is followed by an anti gay or racist or xenophobic remark.

The idea is to put the blame on the potential critic of what they are about to say.

Don't call me a xenophobe when I tell you that our way of life is being destroyed by illegal aliens.

Don't call me a homophobe when I explain why gays should not serve openly in the military.

Don't call me a racist when I tell you that Black on Black crime is not my problem.
