Someone is crowned at a coronation.

Well, maybe there is such a word, but it is so damn ugly, can we stop using it?

And, if your answer to this question is profound, will I inspirate? :smoke:

4. Thank you for that.
"Coronated" is high on my list of annoyingly made-up words.

Yep, I've wanted to point that out many a time.
Last I check, it technically *was* a word (I was surprised!), but crowned is technically the correct word to use. I think coronated probably evolved out of misuse.

21. My former English prof would have heart failure if I had ever used that term!
She gave me a pretty hard time for using "referencing" as a verb. I find it useful, but I sure changed it (it was in my Master's thesis and I wanted no trouble, plus I really liked and respected her).

6. What do you all expect
after this many years of Bushisms. I just about shot myself the other day when I used a stupid expression that he uses. It's a good thing I was talking to myself.

7. Not recognised by Oxford or Cambridge dictionaries,
but Merriam-Webster lists it, so I'm afraid it is an American expression only.

I'd never heard it until you posted it. I think I can live without it.

10. Oh, yes there is!

But now that you mention it, it does sound ugly.

(So does the word "blouse" if you say it enough times.)

11. Yep. Shirtwaist sounds better, but try asking for that
in a store.

Sometimes it is fun to watch the teenage clerks' heads explode . . .

20. Literally or figuratively?
Literally - pantywaists were a version of long johns - a long sleeved button up the front top and pull on bottoms (usually knee length) that buttoned together at the waist. Little boys wore them under their collarless shirts and knickerbocker trousers. I think the Mormon "garment" is actually quite similar, although it may be a one-piece - er - foundation garment.

Figuratively - an effeminate or weak man; a ninety pound weakling; bully's favourite target . . .

I suspect that the more avant garde women of the day probably wore pantywaists under their shirtwaists and bloomers, forgoing the corset and petticoats!

23. I detest "orientate." So much better to use plain old "orient" as a verb. However,
I suspect even that usage is a relatively new one...
