Does anyone remember who the republicans were courting to run for President
Edited on Tue Jan-08-08 02:19 PM by Horse with no Name
a couple of years ago?
Just thinking outside the box here--but few can deny that OUR choices were made by the MSM.
The other candidates barely existed.
So what did we end up with?
A Black man and a woman. Were they intended as trial balloons?

Now, it looks pretty inevitable that one or the other will become our next President next to the pitiful group of republicans.

Now, what would happen IF the republicans brought in the candidate that many were courting a year or two ago? How would that change the dynamics of this race?

1. George "Maccaca" Allen
He has a hunting show on a local cable network in Virginia now. Couldn't get a job as dogcatcher.

3. Some on their side were hoping to neutralize any perceived race or gender advantage with Condi.
Too bad for them that she wasn't interested in running. But even if she had run, I don't think she would have done too well. A whole lot of people in this country are fed up with Chimpy's foreign policies, and as NSA for his first term and Secretary of State for his second, Condi is the embodiment of those failed policies, IMHO. Even if she had faced Obama or Clinton in the GE, her negatives by being tied to Chimpy would have been too high to overcome, and her race and gender would have been largely moot.

Please note this is pure speculation on my part. :)

5. Not "pure" speculation. I think you're right on the money.
I'm certain enough flattery could have turned around any reluctance on her part. The reason she never was going to run was that the powers that be in the Republican establishment could never get around to supporting a woman as their leader.

7. Have to agree with you. I've been saying for a long time - if you want
to make sure something gets ROYALLY screwed up, put condi on it.

contradicta is THE face of utter incompetence. She may have a bigger "Reverse Midas Touch" than even her miserable, arrogant, asshole boyfriend does.

Let's not forget, for example, who won the tug-of-war with rummy for the position of "coordinator of post-war Iraq." And what a CAPITAL job she's done on that one, too, 'eh?

perilous.

13. He can't be dismissed..
but he is the equivalent IMO of the Democrats nominating Hillary. He invokes controversy within his own party.

14. But the difference in republicans and Democrats
republicans are fiercely loyal to their party. Democrats are idealists.

16. Wedge issues have been a big draw for repubs in the past..
I just don't see McCain being able to muster that kind of enthusiasm. I don't see him being able to galvanize evangelicals for example. Perhaps he'd try and pick a running mate who would.

Some here have compared a McCain run to Bob Dole's in '96, and I think that's probably a good comparison.

8. Oh, please. No one associated with Bush can run, let alone win.
PLEASE don't make the argument that the reason to vote for Edwards is that he's the WHITE MAN.

It is such an insult to all of us.
