Obama's religion.
There is now an e-mail spreading across the internet stating Obama belongs to an anti-white African Church. This is wrong. No one has provided any evidence to suggest that whites are not allowed in Obama's church, the Trinity United Church of Christ. What their mission statement says is really no different than many religions in American today.

Take for instance the Greek Orthodox Church. We have a pretty large Greek population in Salt Lake City and the Greek Orthodox Church caters to their needs. Every year they have a major Greek festival and there is no denying the connection they have with Greece, since that is a major aspect of their culture.

Growing up, my mother belonged to Saint Patrick's Catholic Church, a predominately Irish Catholic Church that catered to mostly Irish Americans. Even today the church holds fundraisers and events for people in Ireland. Does that make them bigoted to other cultures? No, it just means they are more inclusive to their own, since most of the parish happens to have Irish ancestry.

To show that this really isn't a "black" or "white" issue, here's the mission statement on the Church of Holy Trinity of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, a Polish Church.

With great optimism we look forward to fulfilling our promises as we celebrate the rich traditions of our Polish heritage. We pray for the Lord's guidance in our journey.

Now how is that any different than what Obama's church teaches? Is it because they happen to be black? Well substitute black for Irish, Italian, Polish or Greek and you wouldn't have a problem, would you?

2. Excellent point--thanks.

I can certainly relate to that (through another St. Patrick's) and can think of any number of examples.

Love those Greek festivals, too!

5. Ugh
I yearn for the day when religion is unimportant to the election of a candidate. Instead of focusing on a person's religion, we should focus on their policies, issues, record, and how they plan on making this country better.

8. Obama isn't the change agent. The weather is.
No matter who gets in, there are going to be drastic changes that nobody is talking about.

10. It's absurd, because...
...while the UCC is known for its inclusivity, it's still primarily a "white" denomination, in terms of membership.

11. Today I heard on CSPAN several times a similar b.s. meme
from repuke callers the f-up line about his being a Muslim now this e-mail with a distorted story about his church. These repukes will stop at nothing to keep all of us back in the stone ages. I know that if Obama ends up being the nominee for our party, we can not allow this bullshit to fly.

15. Great article on his beliefs
Here's a great piece that I just read this evening, My Spiritual Journey.

I'm an ardent non-believer but don't have a problem with the sincere religious beleifs of others - as long as they don't push their beliefs on me.
After reading it, I'm leaning more toward Obama.

" Whatever we once were, we are no longer just a Christian nation; we are also a Jewish nation, a Muslim nation, a Buddhist nation, a Hindu nation, and a nation of nonbelievers."-Barack Obama
