Edwards is against corrupt corporations; he's NOT against wealthy individuals
Edited on Sun Jan-06-08 11:43 AM by brentspeak
It's important to point out this crucial difference, because the "Edwards' is a millionaire with a 24,000 square-foot house/and yet he's got the nerve to rail against big corporations on behalf of the 'little guy'" meme-smear is something we're going to continue and continue and continue hearing from now on.

Yes, the mainstream media, beltway elite, GOP, and neoliberals are scared witless over the prospect of an Edwards' presidency.

1. He Earned Half A Million Working With A Predatory-Lending Hedge Fund
So I guess he's not *that* upset with evil corporations - as long as they're making his yacht payments.

3. I like Edwards, I disagree with many of his shrill supporters.
However, a 24,000 square foot house is OBSCENE. That is not be a good citizen. That is a tremendous waste of money and resources. Look, my family lives in a 4,000 square foot house with five people in it and we have far more room than we need. Six times that? That's just gross.

4. Do you disagree with many of Obama and Hillary's "shrill" supporters?
Edited on Sun Jan-06-08 11:54 AM by brentspeak
BTW, your comment regarding Edwards' "OBSCENE" and "gross" house seems to define the word "shrill".

5. No, that is a perfectly apt description.
Hillary's and Obama's supporters can be obnoxious when they type in all caps and cling to indefensible positions. However, Edwards' supporters pretending they don't see why Edwards' second place finish was not so much better than Hillary's nearly equal finish are just ridiculous.

Back to Edwards' house, what word should I use for what by even an objective standard is an excessive house? Above-average? Large? No. That thing is completely beyond the pale of reasonable personal behavior. Stanley O'Neil's $162 million for running Merril Lynch into the ground can be called obscene without anyone calling the use of the word "obscene" shrill. That is obscene. A 24,000 square foot house is obscene. You can keep 10 families in there.

6. Edwards hates the evil corporations so much...
that he has 16 million dollars invested in Fortress, one of those evil corporations(hedge funds and subprime lender)that just happens to be based offshore(gasp)in the Cayman Islands.

Edwards says that we are to believe what he tells us and to disregard all the 'rumors.'

His house is not actually that large...it is 28,000 sq. ft. of 'enclosed' space. The house is not actually much larger than the gym(including pool).

If you look at the house 'in situ,' you find that it is the southern plantation house revisited with the slave quarters between the house and the gym. Plenty of room for a lear jet runway on the property but would be unlikely to take Air Force One.

8. I understand your problem with the house
but, this house is THEIR dream, not yours. They don't spend money on fancy cars. And heaven knows, they dress like they shop at JC Penneys, not Sak's Fifth Ave. This house is their one and only splurge, and I don't see a problem with it. They are trying to make it as earth friendly as possible, and it will probably become the southern White House. They love their family, maybe they have planned for having his mom and dad come live with them when they can no longer live on their own. We are not privy to their plans.

And, besides, what right would any of us have to tell them how to spend their money, when they have earned it legally. They did not scam it from little old ladies who were told to donate or they won't go to heaven. They haven't scammed the government. They didn't get it by getting no bid contracts from connections in the government. They did it the old fashioned way, by working hard.

7. Wealth perpetuates poverty.
Fact of life. There's only so much to go around.

A 25,000 square foot house is a waste. I like edwards, as I like Kucinich, but that house of his is enough to house an army.
