Edwards endorses diplomacy
Illustrating Benazir Bhutto's assassination as a poignant example, a high-energy John Edwards told Dubuque voters Friday that multilateral diplomacy is needed to achieve a "calming influence" in Pakistan amid "virulently anti-American" sentiment.

Nearly 300 people arrived at the Colts Community Center to hear a fiery half-hour speech by the Democratic presidential candidate, clad in a navy suit with thick boots to abate several inches of new-fallen snow. Praising Bhutto as an "extraordinary" woman whose death was "tragic and sad," Edwards avoided politicizing it after a media flap earlier that day between Hillary Clinton, who accused Barack Obama of exploiting the event.

"It's very important not to politicize this," he said. "But we need a leader who understands the complexity and the enormous risk involved," remarking that Bhutto herself had once said "the path to democracy in Pakistan is bathed in blood."

Bridging on foreign policy to the Iraq War, Edwards said real change means strong ethics and unwavering courage.

5. Because I have many family members living in Pakistan,
I was very interested in what Edwards's response to the Bhutto assassination would be. I was favorable impressed.

A sample of posts from Pakistan at the BBC News website:

"The peoples of Rawalpindi are showing their anger by burning the shops at Murree road Rawalpindi. And my cousin has told me in Lahore the lovers of Benazir are burning the cars and tyres on road."

"I would rather call it a "double-terrorism", firstly Benazir Bhutto's assassination, secondly the things going on in the streets! I can see terrible protests in Larkana, on roads, setting the shops and banks on fire, breaking its doors and taking things away. All our property from lockers has been taken away by looters, but there is no police! No-one to control. I beg the government to help us and send some police and army troops. Why is it confined to big cities only? Save Benazir's city. "

~~

While recognizing that Benazir Bhutto wasn't perfect, my family mourns her death. She had great courage, and she loved her country deeply.

That said, all talk of diplomacy can do nothing but good.

Better yet, more than talk.

9. "the enormous risk involved"?
What is the purpose of this? To indicate gravitas? To give some assurance that JRE understands danger? Or plain old fear?
