I have to wonder what the Bhutto people were thinking.
Everybody over 30 and still alive on this planet (and there are a lot fewer since W stole the Presidency) knows that George Bush is The Angel of Death, or at least his stand-in. If George Bush supports you, you are a gonner. If George Bush throws his weight your way, you are going to go crashing down. If George thinks you have a good idea, it's time for a Reality Check.
And everyone also knew that George was really hot for Mussharaff, despite all his "official" pronouncements. George loves dictatorship, his own and others. That's because dealing one-on-one is so much easier than courting whole populations. You either buy out your counterpart dictator, submit to his superior power, or rub him out. No tricky balancing act there, no give or take--Might makes Right!
So why was Benazir trotting home to be the sacrificial lamb in a George Bush/Pervez Mussharaff bully extravaganza? Did she have a martyr complex? Did she try to co-opt Bush? Did she think the rest of the world would care, or intervene? We're talking about the cut-rate, international nuclear chop shop, opium shippers to the world, home of Osama bin Ladin, etc.
What was she thinking? And why would she have had the slightest reason to think so?
