I'm not an Oprah Winfrey fan
but hell, if she really can get more people to vote, how is that not a good thing? She's managed to get people to read- and in this country that's no mean feat. OK, maybe she's only gotten people to buy books, but still...

I don't give a fig that she may have voted repuke sometimes. Or that she never endorsed a candidate for prez before. We live in a country where a shocking number of people don't vote. If she can actually engage more people, that's a very, very good thing.

1. Don't lie Cali, you know you love her.
:)

I agree, I never watch Oprah either. Anyone that can get more people involved in the political process is good! I'd say the exact same thing if Oprah had endorsed Hillary or Edwards, etc.

6. You know, I actually have nothing against her
It's just I've never even seen her show.

7. I was just teasing :)
I really have no opinion one way or the other about Oprah. I don't watch the show, except I've taped it a few times when like Obama or Bill Clinton were on, but it's not my type of show.

Stop picking on Oprah's feet!

3. Here's the problem
Oprah Winfrey hasn't really given any indication as to WHY she supports Obama. All I've heard from her, is a bunch of "he's a good guy" or "I like him."

I haven't heard her say what policy proposals or positions that Obama has, that she agrees with. If she's going to publicly assert herself into this election, you'd think she'd at least be able to seriously articulate why she supports Obama.

8. Then you didn't listen
She specifically pointed to racial profiling legislation, pre-school, nonproliferation legislation, tax cuts, and being against the war. Some of us know his record quite well. If you aren't going to listen to Oprah, you sure as hell aren't going to listen to me.

11. Did she mention this stuff today? That's not surprising. She's obviously been given the talking
points by the Obama campaign. I'm saying that before today, she hasn't mentioned any specific policy agreements with Obama; she hadn't made the case as to why she supports him.

Of course she was going to lay out the case today---the Obama camp gave her the talking points.

She has so much sand in her ear from burying her head in it.

Most Hillaristas are like that.

9. I watched her once in a while. I was shocked the day I tuned in and saw her
fawning over bush. I lost all interest in her after that

Oh yeah, except I tuned in about 6 months ago. And holy shit

she was fawning over Bill O'Reilly. He wanted to protect children?:eyes:

Anyway, I wondered how the hell Oprah could be so out of touch.:puke:

14. Same here
She's had quite a streak...

She just gushed over GWB...blech!
Remember the author of "A Million Little Pieces"?
How about Dr. Jan Adams? (Donda West's surgeon)
Her Leadership School -- and abuses?
O'Reilly?

I have zero respect for her at this point.

5. She can definitely move people.
Edited on Sat Dec-08-07 06:58 PM by Mike03
My first editions of Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" rose more than four hundred percent after she made it her reading selection of the month.

But what kind of people can be motivated to abandon one choice for another because their favorite celebrity endorses him/her? Wouldn't that be a pathetic situation?

If she can motivate people to vote, that's great, but changing the minds of people is another thing, unless she does it by facts rather than influence.

ON EDIT: What I mean to say, is that hopefully no one wants uninformed people walking into a voting booth and just pushing buttons like a monkey plays the xylophone because someone they admire or hero-worship tells them to vote that way. We need people who can read, analyze and think for themselves to vote.

15. What I admire most about her
She was a powerful help in turning back what was a rapidly failing interest in book reading among the American public. A great achievement.

20. She isn't trying to make people walk into a voting booth and push buttons like monkeys.
She wants to get people to start thinking about politics PERIOD, and to listen to Obama, who SHE thinks can change this country and the world. She's the draw. He's the deal-closer.

10. I don't think I've ever seen her show
but she's a great actress, she obviously has SOMETHING that has made her the wealthiest woman in entertainment and if she moves some new voters into the ring, God bless her.

13. To paraphrase Eddie Murphy
Oprah is some white folks' worst nightmare: An intelligent sister with enough F-U money to do and say whatever she damned well pleases.

16. People wont vote for Obama because she likes Obama, but if even one person
becomes involved politically, because of going to see her campaign for him, shes done a very good thing.

And I do like Oprah. :)
