Thanksgiving: Fox News vs. CNN International
I was watching story on Fox about people spending Thanksgiving camping out in front of BEST BUY waiting for the doors to open Friday so they could buy some game console or something.

Disgusted with that story, I switched over to CNN International and they had the exact same story, except the people lined up overnight were in Bangladesh, and they were waiting for rice.

2. Recalling that old Oprah story, maybe she works for FOX too?
http://juicy-news.blogspot.com/2007/01/oprah-disses-inner-city-kids.html

And a response worth reading. In particular:

Others pointed out the inherent weakness of comparing students from places with drastic differences in lifestyle and culture.

Others noted the irony of Winfrey decrying the materialism of inner-city students when she is famous for her own extravagant lifestyle.

She loves giving away things on her show. I imagine somebody's going to pick up on that; especially if they're impressionable children... Oprah too has her own part to play.

But the entire article is worth reading.

4. Sadly I think that Oprah has really lost touch with mainstream...er..
humanity. Her "favorite things" show was on the other day, and it was little more than an orgy of excessive consumerism. You won't see her doing a show on celebrating the holidays on a shoestring budget or alternatives to pricey gifts. Her commercial sponsors make her extravagant lifestyle possible, after all. She does do good works, certainly, but she also promotes an entirely unsustainable lifestyle. People trying to measure up to Oprah's vision of "success" are going to ultimately end up deeply in debt and alienated from their loved ones because their lives will be focused on the accumulation of luxury items. I'd love to see one of her "live your best life" shows focus on voluntary simplicity, but I won't hold my breath.

5. There will be poor always .... everything is relative
Edited on Thu Nov-22-07 09:19 PM by sjdnb
Earlier, I read a thread critical of the Macy's Parade and, I thought, hey -- my kids love watching the bands (yeah, they are band geeks) ... and, yeah, we've moved our Thanksgiving from Thursday to Saturday so we can go serve food at a local shelter ... but, we don't get down on those average Americans who try to enjoy a little of life - whatever they find enjoyable.

They work hard for what they get and worry every day that it might be gone tomorrow. But the attitude expressed, is why, in part, Dems have the 'elitist - out of touch' tag assigned to them. Too often they are ready to be critical of the working class for just trying to have a little bit of fun in between the endless hours of productivity and worry. You want to go after someone, don't go after those 'in line' anywhere -- go after those who have the resources to never, ever, have to stand in line, anywhere, anytime, for anything their heart might desire.

8. Not to be picking on your post...but the "there will alwys be...
people", is something that sticks in my craw. My usual response is, "yes, there will always be poor people, but why do we allow so many of them to remain that way?"

With the bush system, (and Reagan before him), the # of poor people has risen dramatically, as have the # of people who work 2 jobs, and increase productivity so they can assuage their fear of losing their job on a management whim. My questioon is "why are we producing so many more "poor" people?"
