Edwards calls for renewed effort on hunger

On the eve of Thanksgiving, John Edwards outlined a plan today to fight hunger in America and share the nation's bounty.

"This is an issue we can do something about. We have a moral responsibility as a country," he said in a conference call with reporters.

Edwards cited a report released last week that estimated that more than 35.5 million Americans, including 13 million children, went hungry during last year.

His plan includes a farm bill with strong nutrition programs; new proposals to expand food stamps and other aid for poor families and seniors; an expansion of school breakfast, subsidized lunch, after-school, and summer food programs; help for families facing high home heating costs, and a public-private partnership to bring fresh fruits and vegetables and promote healthy foods in every neighborhood.
