1. Robertson wants to keep his Bush tax cuts.
That's all it is. He figures Rudy is his best chance at that.

Religion is just a front for these people. Their treasure is not in the "kingdom of heaven," it is right here in their big-ass bank accounts. And as the saying goes, where a man's treasure is, there is his heart.

2. I think it depends on what Giuliani does now
Don't be surprised if he has a sudden 'change of heart' regarding his stance on abortion and gay rights.

4. He'd have to be committing Hari Kiri
Not even the most ardent vote chaser does a 360 on both issues.

6. Consider the audience, here
Edited on Sat Nov-10-07 08:51 AM by Love Bug
All Giuliani has to do is go on tv and tearfully state how Jesus told him to change his position on abortion and gay rights and the religious 'right' will fall for it, just like they fall for Bush's BS time after time after time.

Now, timing is everything. What he he needs to do is wait until after he has the nomination. Then he and Pat Robetson can make their joint appearance at a press conference where Pat hands Rudy a kleenex or two to sop up his crocodile tears.

BTW -- Welcome to DU, Traps! :D

8. Thanks Love Bug
My mom used to drive one of those years ago.

If Giuliani did try that there'll be a desperate need for many kleenexes on the night he is beaten to the nomination...

3. I don't see how 'vote for giuliani, he'll end the world' will resonate. :)

5. Giuliani's hall pass in this campaign is that he happened to be the mayor of
New York during the 9/11 attacks. There's little else to build a compelling case for his candidacy as a Republican.

In the terra terra terra era Giuliani is the "logical" choice of people who are frightened that remorseless Islamic terrorists are a moment away from laying their cities to waste.

Most Democrats aren't in that demographic and most DU registrants are even less in that demographic, and a good number of us find Giuliani appalling.

The Robertson endorsement is interesting because Giuliani's hero profile is not universally perceived. If the hero of 9/11 -- "America's Mayor!" -- has to go pandering to Pat Robertson to assuage the misgivings of the far-right nutbags in the Republican primary campaign, then his candidacy is not as compelling as he thinks it is.

Romney, as hapless a fool and as smarmy a creep as ever danced on the political stage, is leading Giuliani in Iowa and in New Hampshire, and is moving up persuasively in South Carolina. That's 3 eary states that Giuliani the hero is not leading in and may well not win.

I'm not sure the Giuliani campaign is even competing that hard in Iowa. He appears to be concentrating harder on New Hampshire. But he's not playing as well there as Mitt Romney. Robertson has his minions in Iowa, but I think Huck or Romney wins Iowa, with everyone else, including Giuliani, somewhere far down in the final vote and well off the front page of the next day's papers
