Helena, Missoula voters pass war resolutions

Voters in Helena and Missoula have approved resolutions opposing the war in Iraq.

Helena voters on Tuesday passed a nonbinding referendum, that calls for the immediate withdrawal of American troops from Iraq. The unofficial totals show 5,032 votes in favor and 3,108 against.

Helena voters rejected a measure urging Congress to provide a blank check to the military to fight terrorism. The unofficial totals were 3,060 in favor and 4,917 against.

In Missoula, voters were overwhelmingly in favor of a referendum asking Congress to get the U.S. out of the Iraq war. The referendum passed by a vote of 7,897 to 4,421.

Passed in Helena with about 60% in favor and in Missoula with about 64% in favor.

Maybe our 2 Dem Senators will get the message and quit funding the carnage. They kind of rely on Missoua and Helena for their margins of victory in state wide races.

3. The rest of the state skews pretty right though doesn't it?

lots of right wing libertarian types there, last I heard.

4. The east is sparsely populated and tends to be pretty conservative. The Western

cities (by cities we are talking 50,000 to 125000,) tend to be liberal.

Montanans, east or west, don't tend to libertarian as much as independent.

The state as a whole is very educated (most Rhodes Scholars per capita in the country) and we have a long and proud labor history. Our state constitution (rewriiten in the 70's) is probably the most liberal/leftist in the whole county.

We have the right to clean air and water right in our constitution.

The Repo party in the last 5 years has marginalized themselves due to a hard rightward shift accompanied by a shill vindictiveness that has turned off a lot of traditional Republicans.

People tend to have much less hard-core party self identification (both Dems and Repos)than other states do.

5. Man, Montana is SO different from 20 years ago

I lived in a pretty liberal town b/c of the college there, but the majority of the state was RED RED RED. Must be nice to live in Montana now! :hi:
