Obama runs new radio ad in S.C.

Barack Obama shares some of his personal history as the son of a single mother and alludes to the federal government's failed response to Hurricane Katrina in a new radio ad aimed at black voters in South Carolina.

"My father left when I was 2. I only saw him once after that. My mother did her best, struggling to take care of my sister and me," Obama says in the ad. He was born in Honolulu of a father from Kenya and mother from Wichita, Kan., who divorced when he was 2.

"It's hard to heal that hole in your heart. I think about that when I see young boys running loose on the streets of our community, without that male role model -- without opportunity, hope or direction," Obama says in the ad.

And he argues that the federal government doesn't see the needs of minority neighborhoods, and won't until change comes to Washington. "It's not a hurricane, just another disaster Washington can't see," he says. "Millions of our kids attend failing, underfunded schools. Too many young black men in prison, too few in college."

Obama is competing for the support of black voters, particularly with Hillary Clinton, before the primary in January.
