Obama and Edwards Target Clinton on Iran Vote

By TAHMAN BRADLEY AND JACQUELINE KLINGEBIEL
October 8, 2007

Barack Obama joined John Edwards on Monday in going after Hillary Clinton's support for the Kyl-Lieberman amendment, which designated the Iranian Revolutionary Guard a terrorist organization.

"Senator Clinton obviously in 2002 voted to authorize the war in Iraq," Obama told ABC News' Sunlen Miller. "And her willingness to once again extend to the president the benefit of the doubt I think indicates that she hasn't fully learned some of the lessons that we saw back in 2002."

<snip>

Edwards himself stepped up his attack on Clinton in an interview on "progressive" radio.

"You've got George Bush out there rattling his saber about going to war in Iran. The last thing we need to do is give that guy any authority on the first step to move forward. So, I do differ with Senator Clinton about this," said Edwards on The Ed Schultz Radio Show.

Moments after Edwards was on the program Randall Rolph, the registered Democrat who pressed Clinton about her vote on Sunday, told Schultz that Clinton "barked" at him and made it seem like he didn't know what he was talking about. Rolph also accused Clinton of representing "more of the same" as the current Bush administration.

On edit:

Here is a separate report by Jake Tapper shown tonigh on ABC World News Tonight with Charles Gibson. It shows Hillary's confrontation with an Iowa voter on her Iran vote, Joe Liberman, and Jim Webb and John Edwards blasting the resolution as a path to war or, as Webb called it, Cheney's fondest dream.

3. I suspect that Hillary's base of support are low info voters
that are choosing on personality and star quality rather than on substance. The Hillary they support is not the Hillary that is.

5. Wonder if Obama remembers he voted (actually cosponsored) a bill
with the same language back in March 2007 with Chris Dodd and 66 others?

A very similar bill (S.970) co-sponsored by Senators Obama and Dodd in March of 2007 (Iran Counter Proliferation Act of 2007).

Kyl Lieberman amendment (S.AMDT 3017):

"... the United States should designate Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps as a foreign terrorist organization under section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act (8 U.S.C. 1189) and place the Iranian Revolutionary Guards on the list of Specially Designated Global Terrorists as established under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act and initiated under Executive Order 13224."

S.970:

(8) The Secretary of State should designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guards as a Foreign Terrorist Organization under section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act (8 U.S.C. 1189) and the Secretary of the Treasury should place the Iranian Revolutionary Guards on the list of Specially Designated Global Terrorists under Executive Order 13224 (66 Fed. Reg. 186; relating to blocking property and prohibiting transactions with persons who commit, threaten to commit, or support terrorism).

Wonder if he's trying to re-write history?

9. Yes, I've noticed that.
About the only difference I can see is this more recent amendment begins with Crocker and Petraeus's testimony as justification, which does seem to make it somewhat worse.

10. Obama would consider missile strikes on Iran
U.S. Senate candidate Barack Obama suggested Friday that the United States one day might have to launch surgical missile strikes into Iran and Pakistan to keep extremists from getting control of nuclear bombs.

Obama said the United States must first address Iran's attempt to gain nuclear capabilities by going before the United Nations Security Council and lobbying the international community to apply more pressure on Iran to cease nuclear activities. That pressure should come in the form of economic sanctions, he said.

But if those measures fall short, the United States should not rule out military strikes to destroy nuclear production sites in Iran, Obama said.

"The big question is going to be, if Iran is resistant to these pressures, including economic sanctions, which I hope will be imposed if they do not cooperate, at what point are we going to, if any, are we going to take military action?" Obama asked.

12. Well, obviously it's do or die in Iowa for Obama and Edwards...
But I do think it was a horrific vote on Clinton's part ~ Cheney's fondest dream to be sure, but I think in her case it had more to do with the Israel lobby.

17. as if either Edwards or Obama
will do anything different when dealing with that lobby. It's all talk and Clinton is just more honest about it.

19. I wonder about their relationship with that lobby...
I know Obama found himself in hot water when he dared to say that the Palestinians had suffered greatly ~ made me think he might be more even-handed in dealing with the region, maybe more like Carter.

Don't know a thing about Edwards in that regard.

15. Biden says that Iran is no threat, and has a legitimate role in the region
and that instead of saber rattling, we should be talking to all parties.

I am beginning to think that the lower tier candidates have more merit for the Presidency than the top tier candidates. Biden and Dodd voted against Lieberman's wet dream of a resolution against Iran.

16. I think Biden has great knowledge about the region, and I trust him
But the issue with Obama: he missed the vote / and then we find out he sponsored a similar one earlier.
