Newt to GOP: Pledge $30 million before Oct. 21st and I'll compete for the nomination

MARIETTA, Ga. (CNN) — Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich edged closer Thursday to launching a possible run for the GOP presidential candidacy in 2008, telling supporters that if they pledge at least $30 million to his campaign over a three-week period starting Monday and ending Oct. 21, he will compete for the nomination.

Gingrich chose Thursday, the 13th anniversary of the signing of his "Contract With America," to launch his "Solutions Day" campaign, which he said is a search for bi-partisan answers to the country's major challenges.

While never mentioning the 2008 race in his speech Thursday night, Gingrich outlined what sounded like a campaign message when he called for "real change, not the same old stuff."

He said "very bold" proposals are needed to bring the United States government into the 21st century. "I think, as a general rule, that levees should not break, that bridges should not fall, that students should actually learn," Gingrich said.

2. They have got nothing.
If Gingrich enters, so what. But.....
what if Gore entered. That is a big thing.
Honestly, I don't think either will enter.

3. Contract on America II - Revenge of the Republicans
Thank God Newt was running the show in Congress....can you imagine how much more peace and prosperity we might have had if Newt had actually worked with BC instead of fighting and undermining his initiatives every step of the way?

4. Newt lays it on the line, 30 mil or I out of here. I think he will get it, and
probably already has the money lined up. He knows how to stage events. I also think he will tap into the Gates, Buffet, Bloomberg wing of the new way GOP.

6. Quite possible...could just be a little "showmanship."
The "deadline" sounds a little suspicious to me.

7. Notice he doesn't start with zero, this is all new money. It will give Fox
a 30 day promo to bring us up to date on Newt's quest for the WH.

5. There's absolutely no way he's going to raise that kind of money--
donors are either committed or tapped out by now. He's setting the bar this high so that he can save face when he doesn't run. Isn't he mostly trying to sell a book, or get higher speaking fees? I smell a rat.

9. Ofcourse $30Mil is already there, then Gingrich can crow
about it, saying how fast the money was raised,
meaning he is very popular candidate.
