Prosecutor in Larry Craig case: Craig didn't withdraw plea until after he was hurt by publicity
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/huff-wires/20070924/craig-senate/

MINNEAPOLIS — The prosecutor who brought charges against Sen. Larry Craig in an airport sex sting says he told the Idaho senator that he should hire an attorney, according to court papers filed Monday.

Craig's arrest and guilty plea weren't reported in the news media until Aug. 27. On Sept. 1, Craig announced plans to resign by Sept. 30. He later suggested he might stay in the Senate if he could successfully overturn his plea.

Renz wrote that Craig didn't decide to withdraw his plea until after he was hurt by the publicity of the allegations. Denying his motion "prevents further politicking and game playing on the part of the defendant in relation to his plea," Renz wrote.

Craig clearly "had hoped that he could plead guilty and that the plea would not be discovered by the media or public," Renz wrote. "The defendant chose to plead guilty and consciously took that risk. The defendant's current pursuit of withdrawal of his guilty plea is reactionary, calculated and political."

3. It boils down to this . . .
Are we a nation of laws or a nation of men? Let's pretend the convict in this case is some poor schlub who can't afford an attorney and wanted to go back on the lengthy piece of paper he signed. The judge would ask a few real simple questions: Do you understand English? Were you informed you could have an attorney? Did you read this piece of paper before you signed it? Motion denied, and thanks for playing.

But will Sen. Craig get special or deferential treatment simply by virtue of his status as an elected official? Convicts all over the country will be watching his case with particular interest. Just like convicts watched eagerly as Michael Deaver tried to weasel out of charges of influence peddling because he was an alcoholic; how many crimes are committed every day because the perpetrator had been drinking? Deaver didn't get away with it, and neither should Craig.

4. Exactly, until Craig's toe tapping incident made the headlines, he was happy with the guilty plea.
In fact, he was content with being guilty until the event got into the news.

He didn't even tell his wife about it!

What an utter fraud!

5. In the picture of Craig you posted:
Is Craig entering or exiting the closet? Inquiring minds want to know.
