Politico's Mike Allen reports Obama is by far the favorite at the Yearly Kos Convention
Politico Playbook: 'Scratch that'
By: Mike Allen

Updated: August 3, 2007 08:27 AM EST

CHICAGO – Happy Friday and good morning from the 2nd annual YearlyKos, a combination reunion, boot camp and festival for liberal bloggers and online activists. The Democratic candidates will appear together on Saturday, then the campaigns will offer separate breakout sessions. The registration booth’s allotment of the orange bracelets needed to attend Sen. Barack Obama’s session disappeared Friday morning. He is by far the favorite in this anti-war crowd of 2,000.

The Obama campaign, which is based in the Windy City, is catering to the bloggers with a “Volunteer Headquarters Open House” on Saturday and tours of campaign headquarters on Monday. An Obama news release reports 150,000 friends on MySpace.com/barackobama and 115,000 friends on Facebook, with over 19,000 people using Obama Specific Facebook Application.

Plenty of yellow bracelets to see Sen. Hillary Clinton were still available at the YearlyKos registration booth last night. Sen. John Edwards was the second-most popular choice and Clinton was third.

The crowd booed at length Thursday night when an organizer announced that Clinton would not attend her breakout session but instead would send senior adviser Ann Lewis to deal with the crowd. Lewis, who was President Bill Clinton’s communications director and was often supplied for hostile television interviews, is a smart choice: unflappable, cast iron, adept at defusing insolent questions. But look for coverage of whether skipping the session will cost Clinton some of the goodwill she got by showing up.

1. "send senior adviser Ann Lewis to deal with the crowd."
Make no mistake, this is how the DLC view the electorate. As a "crowd" to be "dealt with".

12. That doesn't quite explain it
If they're from Chicago, they've probably already had multiple opportunities to hear Obama speak at one of his town halls or other events. Why would they waste their time going to see him again when they could see one of the other candidates?
So the hometown advantage doesn't quite explain the interest in seeing Obama. I think people from all over the country are just curious to see what he has to say in person, rather than through the biased filter of the media.

8. This is in Chicago, right? That's sort a home-town advantage.
Considering it's Edwards that seems to be winning the straw polls at Kos these days, I think that could be why.

Also, it's politico. They seem to have their own agenda.

Your other reason makes me wonder about your agenda.

21. Dawgs... I don't know which part of my answer has you wondering, but...
let me just say, here and now, I am not a member of ANY candidate's camp as of right now.

I have no agenda, and was mostly being a wise-ass (evidently not very well) about the Edwards straw poll thing.

Senator Clinton Did Not Jilt Kossacks

Thu Aug 02, 2007 at 10:06:25 PM PDT
Senator Clinton's campaign (and in fact those of every candidate participating) have been incredibly flexible and helpful in putting together this Presidential forum. Saturday is going to be an amazing day.

In the weeks leading up to the convention we worked with her campaign and the campaigns of EVERY candidate participating to accommodate a diverse array of scheduling and other concerns.

Yearlykos wholeheartedly disagrees with the sentiments expressed in the diary entitled "Effing Hillary Jilts Kossacks."

There was a miscommunication between Yearlykos and Senator Clinton’s Campaign, which was never under the impression that Senator Clinton would be attending the breakout session due to a scheduling conflict.

We regret due to this miscommunication, the announcement was made so belatedly.

14. So both Edwards and Obama "SOLD OUT" of slots, but somehow that means that Obama is more popular?
Did they have less bracelets for Edwards?

Both sold out, so if Obama has "more" then that just means more of his were available.

19. Actually, they sold out at the same time
First, let's get some facts straight since the Politico is still a RWN tool.

1) 1500 attendees
2) Obama not most popular, considering it is his back yard
3) Clinton is now trying to work out something, now that her campaign has noted all of the boos in the audience and the diaries on Kos, booth not getting much traffic and hardly staffed
4) Edwards attracted many folks coming by the booth, had chairs in two spaces for folks to come by and also do plug-ins for laptops if they needed some juice, also bumper stickers and DVDs. Obama , SOLD t-shirts, I guess to build up the number of "donors"; Edwards didn't try to sell anything
5) I noted quite a few kossacks torn between Edwards and Obama.

This pic says a lot, taken by this DUer and Kossack at JRE booth:

24. Politico is not a "right-wing tool." They are, however, establishment media.
Edited on Fri Aug-03-07 03:11 PM by flpoljunkie
The tickets were not "sold out" as they were not for sale, as I understand. Your saying they "sold out" at the same time is not, in any proof, that is what happened. Your credibility as an Edwards supporter must be factor in to your "facts."

I do not think Politico folks are any particular fans of Obama, either.

I do not doubt that both Obama and Edwards are popular choices with the Yearlykos Convention goers.

25. Update
Edwards campaign is working on getting a bigger room for the break-out session.

Politico is not reliable as Dem news considering it has a connection with Drudge.

Sold out means the attendees signed up or got their wristbands quickly, does not associate with co st. But it is the expression being used here.

And I don't appreciate the hit about my credibility. I am an Edwards supporter, but like Taylor Marsh, I tell things from the ground boots, which I am at the convention itself. I don't if commenter is.
