HRC and BO raising a staggering amount from big donors...($46 million from maxed out donors alone)
Edited on Tue Jul-17-07 02:39 AM by draft_mario_cuomo
Money from people "big donors" giving more than $200

Obama: $40.3 million
HRC: $35.5 million

Money from people giving the maximum of $2,300

HRC: $23.6 million
Obama: $22.7 million

Where did I get these numbers for primary fund-raising from? I did simple math. 71% of Obama's $56.8 million came from those giving over $200 and 90% of HRC's $39.4 came from such donors. 60% of HRC's contributions came from fatcats giving the maximum while 40% of Obama's total came from such donors. Do the math, get the numbers.

Note: $200 has been used as the cut-off mark used to determine small donor support since the last election. I did not arbitrarily choose it.

Context

The breakdown for other Democrats and Republican candidates have not, as far as I know, been mentioned in the press (if someone has seen the figures please let me know. The opensecrets donor demographic breakdown has not been updated with the 2Q data yet), but for the sake of discussion let's use last quarter's percentages. Romney has raised $34.7 million and 6% of it in the 1Q was from those giving $200 or less and 48% was from those giving the maximum. Ghouliani has raised $33.3 million. 8% came from those giving less than $200 in the first quarter and 63% came from those giving the maximum. Let's use the 1Q percentages to give us a ballpark estimate (the percentage from those giving the maximum almost certainly declined in the second quarter, like it did for HRC and BO as their most zealous wealthy supporters had already maxed out last quarter).

From donors giving $200 or more

Romney: $32.6 million (estimated)
Giuliani: $30.6 million (estimated)

From donors giving the maximum of $2,300

Giuliani: $21.0 million (estimated)
Romney: $16.6 million (estimated)

Our top two candidates are raising more money among fatcats than the Republican's top fund-raisers. Isn't that odd? Somewhere Al From must be smiling.

Note: Obama's huge advantage in grassroots support

Of course, all this means Obama raised an impressive $16.5 million from small donors. HRC is competitive with him, as you can see, among big donors. However, he trounces her by a 4-to-1 margin among small donors. Interestingly, Edwards is presumably (we'll have to wait for the actual figures but we can extrapolate from Q1 and the trends evident in BO and HRC's numbers in Q2) in HRC's ballpark when it comes to grassroots fund-raising but is decimated by both HRC and Obama among fatcats. For instance, he probably raised, at most, "only" $9 million* this year from maxed out donors.

*This would be the case if his maxed out support, which was slightly less than BO's last quarter, was similar to BO's again in the second quarter. This is unlikely. Edwards probably relied more on small donors in the 2nd quarter, and his significantly smaller average contribution (about 1/3 less than Obama's) lends credence to that.

1. The best "democracy" money can buy.

Sad but true.
