To The Fair & Balanced Media
By Nancy Greggs

I know that all of you pride yourselves on being fair and balanced, and use every effort to present both sides of every issue.

I must apologize that we, the loony left, have so far been unable to accommodate your programming needs in this regard by providing an articulate spokesperson to balance the many appearances of Ann Coulter on your shows.

We know exactly what would be required, and have advertised widely in an effort to find the perfect candidate for this important position. Alas, our efforts have so far been fruitless.

Despite the numerous visits of Jeff Gannon to the White House, we have been unable to locate anyone who is willing to publicly state that George W. Bush is a big time fag, or that SCOTUS member Justice Alito should be poisoned, or that the war-supporting parents of troops slain in Iraq are enjoying the attention that the deaths of their children have garnered.

Although the (so-called) Religious Right have hijacked Christianity, no one of our political persuasion wants to strenuously suggest that they all be rounded up and forced to convert to Islam, Judaism, or Buddhism – or, for that matter, to actual Christianity. And try as we might, we cannot find a single soul in our ranks who hopes that any GOP presidential hopeful, nor anyone else who still supports the war in Iraq, will die at the hands of terrorists. In fact, although we polled our current Democratic office-holders, not one of them is willing to wish for another 9-11-type attack on our country in order to prove that G.W. Bush has not made the country safer.

It would seem incongruous that people who don’t hesitate to open their big, fat mouths about transparent government, fair elections, and the corruption running rampant in the GOP, would suddenly become such shrinking violets when it comes to publicly discussing the First Twins Gone Wild behavior of Barbie and Jenna, the consistent cluelessness of every administration spokesperson on every topic, and the blatantly obvious criminal activity that, thanks to BushCo, has become business as usual in every aspect of government.

For all of our faults, it cannot be said that we don't have what many perceive to be our own wackos, like Michael Moore promoting accessible health care for all Americans to the detriment of insurance company profits, or Al Gore promoting the kind of conscientious stewardship that could seriously undermine the good folks who are gouging us at the pumps and destroying the environment at the same time.

We ask ourselves the question, again and again: Why will no one of our ilk step up to the plate, and openly discuss their desire to see death and destruction visited upon each and every citizen who does not agree with our position?

I think the answer is painfully obvious: We just don’t seem to have anyone who is classless enough, ignorant enough, or whacked-out enough to promote tastelessness, bigotry and hatred and attempt to pass it off as productive political discourse.

Well, we may be down, but we’re not out. We can still hope that some totally insane liberal will write a few books espousing war and violence as an answer to everything, which will be purchased in bulk by left-wing organizations so as to catapult said tomes to the top of the bestseller lists, thereby creating an instant hate-mongering celebrity who can do the talk-show circuit and spew their nonsensical ideology right along with Annie.

Yeah, it could happen. But I’m not holding my breath – and neither should you.

In the meantime, a hearty thanks on behalf of all good citizens for your fair and balanced reportage – and an abject apology for being too spineless to resort to personal attacks, pseudo-statistics, blatantly obvious lies, and the unabashed calls to violence against our fellow citizens in order to further our Democratic agenda.

I guess we’re just too honest, too straightforward, and too patriotic for our own political good.

Sorry.

9. In all honesty
even if we could find someone to counter Coulter, the media couldn't spare the time for him/her/it. After all, they do have that obligation to keep us informed about the really important stuff. Like Paris Hilton. Or shows devoted to talking about Paris Hilton. Or shows dedicated to talking about shows devoted to Paris Hilton. Let's face it, bimbohood sells. Between Coulter and Hilton, they have their bimbo bases pretty well covered. But Coulter is definitely giving bitchiness a bad rep.

11. You have obviously never been to a war protest
if you have never heard anyone say things like that. I am a college student who has only been active in politics for two years, and I have personally heard liberals say outrageous things like the ones you listed. Judging by my admittedly limited experience, I would say the reason we don't have a prominent Coulter-esque media whore on our side is becuase of poor marketing.

As much as I detest that sort of rhetoric, I find it difficult to deny that there is some to be found among supposed 'liberals'. Wishing it wasn't so won't make it go away. I agree that there is no market among leftists for authors in Coulter's ilk, which is reassuring. The majority of liberals have common decency and believe in reason, but if the media honestly tried, they could find someone willing to take a paycheck to spew 'tastelessness, bigotry, and hatred' of the kind you described.

14. I am (sad to say) a bit older than you ...
Edited on Thu Jun-28-07 09:56 PM by NanceGreggs
... (okay, okay, a LOT older than you), and I can assure I have heard it all -- and some of it ain't pretty.

The difference is (and it's a BIG difference) that we don't proffer up those who advocate violence against fellow citizens who disagee with us, those who openly banter about forcefully converting anyone who does not share our relgious beliefs, or those who publicly express their 'wishful thinking' about judges, presidential candidates, or anyone else dying at the hands of terrorists, as media spokespeople on our behalf.

That's not a matter of 'poor marketing' - that's a matter of understanding that individuals who express such ideas may be justifiably angry, frustrated and at the end of their patience with the status quo, but they do not represent the ideals of our party as a whole.

And by the way, the first war protest I personally attended occurred long before you were born.

36. I agree that there is a fundamental difference between what mainstream leftists
and mainstream conservatives (in America at least, I can't speak as to how things are in other countries) are willing to tolerate. What I took issue with was the assertion that there are no Coulter-analogues on our side of the political spectrum. We rightfully marginalize those people, but they exist nonetheless.

Of course I didn't actually conclude that you have never been to a war protest. I don't know too much of your history, but I would guess that you have been a dedicated advocate for peace for many years. I meant that you are ignoring some of the things which are routinely said at protests if you claim that there is no odious rhetoric on the left.

44. I thought I was being clear ...
... in that this missive was aimed at the media.

I am not ignoring the rhetoric on the left, nor claiming that we don't say some pretty awful things (you should hear ME when I'm yelling at the TV screen).

My point is that we don't trot out people to say the most heinous things about Republicans on national TV and radio shows, and then laud them as speaking for all of us.

Imagine Lucy Liberal showing up on a TV show tonight saying Mitt Romney is a faggot, John McCain should die in a terrorist attack, and parents of soldiers killed in Iraq are enjoying the attention their children's deaths has brought them.

I guarantee you that within minutes, dozens of prominent Democrats would be issing statements denouncing Lucy Liberal, and making it clear that she does not speak for all Democrats.

Coulter spews her hatred and death wishes on a constant basis, and I've never heard a single GOPer denounce her - in fact, she gets invited to their political functions, often as a guest speaker. And right-wing organizations buy her books in bulk, hoping to catapult her garbage to the top of the bestseller lists, ensuring even more publicity for her ideas.

You said in another post here that you wish we had a Liberal media darling to publicly speak the truth. So do I - but only to speak the truth, not to express death wishes for everyone who doesn't agree with them.

15. You're lucky
in that you're of an age when antiwar protests weren't marred by cadres of baseball bat-wielding Trotskyites and suchlike screaming "Death to Everybody!".

We can't equate the rantings of fringe elements at protests to the rantings of well-paid professional shills on the public airwaves. Big difference. And the ranting on the airwaves is all from the right - I mean wrong - side of the aisle.

26. the operative words: supposed liberals.
Aryan Annie is not a supposed conservative Republican. She's the public face and voice of conservative Republicans. Kindly name one liberal democratic public figure who spouts hatred and gets the media air time Aryan Annie gets. And don't use my term Aryan Annie as an example of liberal hatred. I'm not a public figure, just some combat veteran who's disgusted with the reich wing chicken hawks who want to send others off to foreign wars of choice so the corporate elites can rake in the big bucks on the backs and blood of America's now broken military.

37. I agree with everything you say
but I never said that there were prominent leftwing pundits on the same level of hatred and vitriol as Ann Coulter. I merely objected to the implication (unacceptably apologetic, IMO) that there is absolutely no one on the left who says Coulter-esque things.

Besides, who are we to decide who is a mainstream liberal and who is a member of the fringe? Aren't we appealing to the 'no true Scotsman' fallacy in making the blanket statement that our side is above such tactics? By the same token, how can we define a mainstream conservative? What evidence do we have that people are not merely buying Coulter's book out of curiousity rather than agreement with her ideas? Do you think even the majority of the people who buy Christopher Hitchens's book God is Not Great agree with him?

I concur entirely with your assessment of our war-profiteer government. I wish we had a media darling on our side willing to tell the truth about the reasons for the war in Iraq. Somehow Fahrenheit 9/11 didn't do the trick.

Worry not about the money. The voice of the people, take a bow NanceGreggs, is being heard and have the 'man' scared.
